He's always had Xbox's so moving to the PS4 and I'm not entirely sure if I need to buy some added extras in order for him to be up and running xmas day. Read More

PSN Plus especially if he plays online with friends no other cables required if bought brand new boxed. Will need games. Maybe a mic

A TV with a bloomin' HDMI port. I had to buy a new TV to make ours work :(

You don't really need to buy Playstation plus if you're new, they give you a 14 day free trial on the website. Set the PS4 up and then sign up to a new PSN account.

Firstly, he'll need up for sign up for a PSN account and chose his PSN ID. - That can be done when you first run the PS4.
You'll need a HD TV to use the PS4.

You'll need to enter your credit card details onto the PSN account for the 14 day trial. You can then remove them details and cancel the renewal.

If you don't want all that hassle, you can just purchase the PS plus membership from one of the many deals here on HUKD.
Once you get the code, you would need to enter it on the PS4 store.

Brill thanks all.

Don't forget with ps plus you can currently download free of charge, Injustice Gods Amongst Us and next month Infamous First Light. You can keep these for as long as you have ps plus.

Bear in mind the console firmware will need updating straight away so won't play out of the box.

Yeah I would get it out, let it update.

I'd say get the free games on ps plus, but that would require setting up a psn id, but I guess he would want to set that up himself so he can choose hi own name? Or if you know his xbox gamer tag name, you could set one up with that name if it's available

Oh yes, thats an excellent idea, I'll let it update prior to wrapping it up, and thanks for advice on setting up psn, really appreciate it :)

I wouldn't bother with any of the above. Doesn't take long to update, you don't need PS+, and all cables included. As long as you have the internetz, your son will be up and running in 10-20 mins

I'd rather have it in an unopened state and do it myself.

Unbelievably glad we opened ours or we wouldn't have realised we needed to buy a new tv! He'd have sat there on his birthday reading the new games manuals then playing his xbox.

don't update it, let him open the box himself.

Update it so he can play straight out the box. My boyfriend bought me one last year for Xmas & he set it all up before xmas so I could play straight away. The box is easy enough to get into without him knowing you've been in it.

Did that with my son's XBox One last Christmas. Went back in the box easily without losing that new feel. Meant he could play fairly quickly
