Using wired or wireless? Also are you using Internet at the same time?

wireless and yeah using the net but not to watch films etc..

What NAS do you have? My NAS (Seagate Central) is notorious for having slow transfer speeds...

depends on what you mean by slow. A switch will speed it up a little over ethernet. wifi ac will give you faster wifi but you might need a new wifi card and extra aerial.

I've got a WD my cloud and the file transfer rate is slow even using home plugs

Don't know if I can get a better router to use with sky fibre
any router will work with it. you just use the sky router as a modem. plug the sky ethernet into the wan socket on the new router and set that as your dhcp and firewall.
