HD-DVD Movies

Thinking of getting the HD-DVD drive for the Xbox360 but would want a few good films to try out on it when I get it.
I undertand the films and player is multi region so I guess it would probably work out a good bit cheaper to get films online from import sites.

Anyone recommend places to order movies from online that should work out cheaper than the likes of amazon and play.

So far I've only looked at playusa.

Thanks for any recommendations.

HD-DVD is region free, DVD and Blu-ray are region coded.

Yeah, I don't know why anyone in the UK would prefer Blu-ray to HD-DVD when you take region coding into account. Multi-region DVD players were a must to us Brits so we could import disks, region coded Blu-ray just stinks of protectionism and is anti-consumer - not good for us.

Considering blu-ray is outselling HDDVD 2:1 it will most likely be the standard in a year or two, especialy now that Disney have gone over to Blu-ray.
Not to mention that many of the blu-ray films are region free and regionfree bluray players should be coming soon, i dont really see why anyone would buy a HD-DVD (unless there just getting it for there xbox360 as a cheap addon).

EDIT: Sorry about the OT discussion i started.

2:1 means nothing it could be like 200 blu rays were sold in a month and 100 for hd dvd

Disney doesnt mean anything they barely release any films unless they are limited editions -- only thing i can think of is pirates of the caribbean and personlly the last 2 were pants

As for sites, I would recommend Axel Music and Movietyme, both great service and often ship titles early, Axel also take Paypal which is handy  .

DVDsLimited are excellent but as they are UK based and delivery is usually next day they are quite pricey, but handy if you want something at short notice (also take Paypal)

DVDPacific can often be the cheapest using their cheapest shipping but that can take 2 weeks and then Amazon also have a few Bargains from time to time (both these sites risk customs on orders over £18, the others mentioned dont).

UK prices seem to coming down (slowly), and its worth keeping an eye on SendIt as they often have some good price - a good example being the Bourne Ultimatum pre order for only £13.89, US prices are between £15 and £18.

HD DVD prices are lower than blu rays
HD DVD drives are cheaper than blu ray
Production costs are lower

Better films on HD DVD than blu ray and thats a FACT

Just in case you worried the OP somewhat about going HD DVD. Yes, for most of this year Blu-ray has outsold HD DVD by nearly 2:1. However since the inception of both formats it has been 60:40 which is alot closer. In recent weeks, since Paramount announced they would be HD DVD exclusive, it has been much closer 55:45.

No format is going anywhere just yet :p

KevD, Source of that? i havnt seen any of those facts anywhere.

your not misstaking it with LAST WEEKS sales? (the same week of HD DVD's best selling film coming on the market...)

HD DVD's are around the same price as Blu-ray...
HD DVD's drives can be found cheaper yes, but remember many of them are only 1080i.
Productioncosts will come down just like everything else.

Better films? depends who you ask... The only films i will miss are the LOTR films.

They are based on the US Neilsen/Videoscan index, which measures sales in the major US retailers instore and online (and lets face it, this so called "war" will be decided in the States).

Very long threads of constant bickering about figures between fanboys on the US AVSForum.

Like dandoc says, the figures are so small at the mo that really percentages can swing rather easily.

Note, US Neilsen/Videoscan index. In japan HD-DVD waaaay behind. if you look at worldwide stats its closer to 2:1 and the week ending 55:45 like i mentioned is mainly because of HD DVD's transformers, over the next week or two the hype will die down.
If you look at that chart the same week Spiderman 3 is realeased it will most likely be ~4:1 on the weekly.

HD DVD is behind on software sales even though there hardware is cheaper. Just think whats gonna happen when blu-ray starts going even further down in price.

Thanks for the sites kevD

To be honest I can see it being quite some time before a single format is used. At the moment the blu ray players are far too expensive so I'm opting for this - got a good discount through work for the xbox add on so it's not going to cost too much to watch some good films in HD.

try sendit.co.uk

considering blu ray is bulit into a ps3 youd think they are trying to shove it down the buyers throat whilst charging more, at least with xbox its an add on which you only buy if needed, therefore keeping the costs lower.

deals like the 5 free deal at the moment well only encourage more xbox users to take the jump, (like me)

blu ray is winning the "war" at the moment but overall after more xbox users get the add on i think the market will even up and maybe HD dvd will take over, IMO blu ray is only leading at the moment as its built in with the PS3
