Hi we need a printer for home, but I have read about loads on HUKD and found some get hot as they are cheaper than usual and some warm as cartridges are expensive, or toner cartridges have a chip preventing refill beyond a number. So what is the best home printer in both price and running costs please?? I have to be wise as my 9 year old is likely to get trigger happy with the print button!!!!

Many thanks Els

I have had a HP C5180 with a continuous inking system (look up CISS) on it (after market). It is used quite a few times every week we have had it a couple of years and i've never refilled the ink pots back up. It copies scans and prints. It also reads and printes directly from mostmemory cards upto 2gb. It's very good and the quaility of photos from it is very good.

ive always used hewlett packard, their cost per print is usually good and i like their overall package.
i have tried refilled cartridges via cartridge world. i no longer refill cartridges as in my experience they have been rubbish.

Epson BX300F is my recommendation. Passed this tip to a couple of friends and they are very pleased too.

As well as a printer, it has a fax, scanner and photocopier (very handy) built in.

Compatible inks are in the region of £1 each, and takes 5 cartridges so you use less (you only change the empty cart, not a full set). I'm using a continuous ink system on mine, so I'm not even paying that much for my prints.

Prints are very good, though the paper feed doesn't hold many pages - no good if you print a load of leaflets as you need to keep feeding it, but then again that's not it's intended use. It's a tad bulky as it's an all in one, but then again you save on having a seperate scanner, etc.
It's a noisy thing, but all singing and dancing if you can live with that!

Best prices were around £40, so search before you buy, as you can pay up to £78 looking around.

Try here http://********************co.uk/Canon-Outlet__W0QQ_armrsZ1 that's where I bought from after a lot of searching.

The ink question goes on forever. For sure, separate inks are better than combined colour inks. However, you have to think about just how much colour you will use. I have mine set to print everything in greyscale as default and at low resolution and I only up it when I need a more professional finish.

I print some photos so I want a decent photo printer and I've lengthy experience with Canon and HP. I also wanted a scanner and fax (I know you can use Pam fax etc. but not this time). I bought a Canon MX310 for about £30. It also came with a full set of large original inks. The scanner feeder is great.

If you avoid much colour printing and don't use it for photos except for that "I need a photo printed in 10 minutes" moment, then you don't need to worry about cartridges. Just understand that owning a printer, any printer, is not a one off payment.
