Not sure if you need an xbl account or not, but it should be ok just connecting it to the net.

if you do need xbox live just make a new account and use the free month trial to update

You'll need to be connected to xbox live, but a silver account will be fine.

A small update downloaded from Xbox Live will let you play AAC music, AVI videos, etc

Sharing Media with a PC through Ethernet should be explained here

you could just connect your xbox 360 to the internet then maybe you could download the updates from xbox live silver (which is free). it will then play divx, wmv, mpeg-4 and it should play xvid and avi. it can also play these formats in 720p and 1080p if connected through HDMI or in 720p if connected through component. i havn't tried this yet but it should work. sorry if i'm wrong
