I have a Synology DS216j with 2 x 3TB WD Red HDD's installed. The problem I have is that in INFO CENTER (within the CONTROL PANEL) it is only showing the HDD in Bay 2 (it shows it as SHR), but it displays no second HDD in Bay 1 (only the Disk 2 led is showing any activity on the Synology case).

If I take the HDD's out and swap them around and then reinstall the Synology software, again it only shows the disc in Bay 2 (so both HDD's show up whtn they're in Bay 2, but neither in Bay 1).

Does in sound like the enclosure is faulty? If I need to send it back are my login security details only stored on the HDD's or does the info reside in the DS216j's memory somewhere?

Many thanks in advance. :(

must be a problem with the enclosure . have you tried fully powering it downfor a few minutes? it could have a overload protection that may reset.

Youve set it up as shr which is really designed for different size drives and maybe 4 drives is best
Try JBOD if need maximum storage or Raid 0 or 1 for striping or mirroring.
Synology DSM is wrote to the drives.

It's automatically set up as SHR DracUK. I can't se anywhere where it's giving me the option to change the RAID type (I understand that RAID1 is what I'm trying to achieve).

It shouldn't have 'automatically' done anything but you can remove the existing configuration and start again.... this will wipe the disks.

StorageManager will do SHR when you choose the quick option which will choose the best RAID option for you.

Does it show both hard disks in Storage Manager > HDD/SSD ? If not then swap the hard disks again. If the symptoms are still the same I'd get in touch with Synology.

IF you just installed them Im going to assume its set it to RAID? THis happened to me when I popped in 2 drives. You need to un RAID them and re-sort the stoage

Synology have confirmed the unit is likely faulty. Thanks for you suggestions and assistance all :)
