HELP please, looking for a Sim card to use in South Africa.

Hi all, I'm going to South Africa in July and I'm looking for a sim card that I can use over there primarily to contact others in South Africa and also to call my folks in the UK. Have googled it but it looks like a bit of a mine field.

Can anyone recommend anything?

I've established that my mobile(Nokia 6070) is unlocked and is triband, compatible with the 900 frequency.

Will rep all helpers.

I always wait until I get to the country and buy a sim card there

I have thought about that but I will need to call people as soon as I land at the airport. Also I have read about problems foreigners have purchasing sim cards. in South Africa http://www.inthenews.co.za/2009/09/17/rica-how-is-it-going-to-work/

wait until you get to the airport...if you are flying into joburg there are a few shops in arrivals that sell them, they will set it up for you

passport and proof of 1 nights accommodation is all you need

You don't think they'll be drastically more expensive at the airport?

I can't say that I know much about it, as hubby does all this sort of stuff, but he was saying this week that he was getting a sim, for using in Egypt, from these:

No time limit apparently, which is good.

mumbojumbo
There are Vodacom shops at the airport terminal. Vodacom are related to Vodafone. You have to register all South African phone sims now, but it's easy to do.

Thanks for the info. Is it just a case of registering it at the airport on the spot when you buy it then? Do you know how much they cost with call time at all?

I have seen one with £24 call time for £30.
