Help with photo editing

I have a picture with me and my parents, and I am trying to paint the background white and then put a new background in, similar to the backgrounds from professional photos. I am doing this in paint.

I am having two problems with this, first of all I'm finding it a bit difficult when painting areas next to the body. Is there a better and/or easier way to do this, or a better program (that is free).

Secondly, if I eventually do finish the painting the background white, I have a good suspicion that when I try to put the image on top of my chosen background, the parts that I painted white in the original image will just cover the new background, if you follow my line of thought. Any suggestions to overcome this.

Just try removing the background?

Best FREE tool I've managed to find that does this easily is called Background Burner.

https://www.bonanza.com/background_burner

I've used it a few times for making things look better (more professional) when selling bits on eBay

Hope it helps.

You could try Gimp (it's Free) and it's Paths tool. Paint is okay for basic things (unless you are using Paint.NET)

Yes gimp is free but similar to photoshop - you need to zoom in and use the selection tool or wizard or a brush and make the background transparent - then you copy the updated image and paste it onto your new background

If you need further advice - search youtube for tutorial - transparent background

Thanks for the offer, it's very kind of you. But its a picture of my graduation, I would prefer it to stay private.

I was using Background burner but found it not to be accurate enough for my needs. Then I moved on to gimp, which is excellent, precise and easy to use. However, when saving the file it just saves it as a file that can only be opened in gimp, does any of you guys know if there a way in which I can save it as PNG or JPEG

Never mind, I have solved this problem. I had to click on 'export' instead of 'save as', which gave the option of saving it as jpeg and png.
