Using a USB stick is not recommended by Nintendo. In saying that, I use one too and I've not had any issues with mine. For all they cost it might be worth buying another one to see if it's just a dodgy stick.

They recommend USB hard drives with their own power supply don't they? I haven't seen one of those in a while since they're all powered from USB now

Yeah that's what they recommend. An alternative would be an SD card with USB adaptor which should also work (though again not recommended)

It's bloody rubbish... I'm getting a y cable to plug in the new usbs as I heard that works but I've heard downloading to the Wii u's memory then transferring over to memory stick but it's an 8gb and hasn't got the room for the initial download
