Hi, my wife and her sis are going to new york next year (not booked yet) and was wondering if anyone had any advice on best places to stay, things to see (beyond the obvious tourist places), best shopping, best time to go etc. Thanks - HotUKDeals

My wife and I did five days with during Thanks Giving week in 2014 as a 50th Birthday trip.

Things to do is governed by how many days? Basically its plan plan plan did I say PLAN?
Things we did.....

Sadly a day of shopping ;) , however I expect your wife and her sis will love it! We did Bloomingdales plus other shops for the list of things to get. :(

Wanted to do dinner, however booked on the fly for that, dined just off Times Square. Like has been said plenty of place to eat, just research what you like to eat first.

Wanted to do theatre, did two shows in end by mistake got ripped off at agency for the Lion King, best to go to theatre ASAP on arrival and get a tickets on the door for the showing you want, i.e. no agency fees/mark-up, there are always seats!

Wanted to do ESB in days and Rockafella Centre at night, just ended with Rockafella only, lift is great, lights up, did Macey’s Sale, was Christmas though.

We went for the Macey Parade, was great but that's in November.

We BOUGHT the https://www.newyorkpass.com/En/ not cheap but gives lots of stuff, there are others too, got this and the bus pass with it, so did a bus tour too! But does depend on time there for value.

Basically I wanted to do a land, air and sea excursion, considered a ticket, but ended up doing it separate, don't know if bad or not, as prices all change with discounts anyway.

We booked a free walk, it was great http://www.freetoursbyfoot.com/new-york-tours/ there are others walking sights
We did http://www.freetoursbyfoot.com/new-york-tours/brooklyn-tours/brooklyn-bridge-brooklyn-heights-and-dumbo-tour/ because I wanted to do that area, walk on the bridge, we had good weather for at the time.

We did a subway run to from hotel to free walk meeting point down by WTC just to do it, cheap as chips.

Wanted to do helicopter, so booked while there via phone.

We did the yellow taxis ferry, goes all over.

Defo do the bikes in Central Park, we didn't. We did the bloke on the bike (rickshaw type?) pulling me and Mrs, she wanted to do the horse carriage. He was a good laugh and you can barter a price too.

Did the Grand central station, just for a look.

Did the WTC, new fountains for WTC1 and WTC2 holes, now have one new WTC1 tall building, saw the Wall street Bull.

Did the Staton island ferry first time, it’s free.

Wanted to do http://www.nymediaboat.com/ Media Boat but Mrs wouldn’t give it a go…… looks good.

So NYC, well like usual, essential you work out what you'd like to do before you go! Work out your must do's, you probably know them already, maybe some of the above.

Finally we have stayed at:
1. Salisbury Hotel, 123 57th Street, New York City, - http://www.nycsalisbury.com and
2. Wellington Hotel, Seventh Avenue at 55th Street New York, - http://wellingtonhotel.com

I think average prices for NYC but location fantastic for both, hotels basic but OK, both where good bases the explore NYC.

hope this helps....

Have a look on trip advisor. It'll give you some great ideas on where to eat, see, do etc. Take the states island ferry when you're there. Passes right by Statue of Liberty. Empire State is good too. Chinatown was crazy! FAO Schwartz toy shop was really good!

Head over to pruzzo's in the bronx for the best sandwiches/subs in town.

As first time I wouldn't recommend staying outside I would stay round about time square as handy for everything shopping is good in Woodbury common best time to go if looking for bargains is Black Friday which is the day after thanks giving and the new freedom tower is not to be missed it is amazing

I normally go into my local or central library and photocopy relevant pages out of Rough guide books or the lonely planet guide books. There is also the website : http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk or is it .com? who are good for info like that.

Stay outside Manhattan it is much cheaper and you can be in with a very short subway ride. Came back from NY at the end of June and stayed at the LIC hotel long island city. It's 1 stop to Manhattan and from there you can explore by foot.

Check out : central park, MoMA, Guggenheim, AMNH, bloomingdales, times square. See trip advisor for more.

Food, loads of places to eat, if you follow MvF then check out the website for new York eats there is also a dedicated website for all he food shows that follow that format (you gotta eat here etc).

Anything G else just ask....
