It says that it does not have a built in optical drive. Not knowing what one is, will it be a problems not having one?

Any help and advice will be greatly appreciated.

That looks ok for the money, you might want to streamline XP to increase speed, that mobile cpu is 2 generations old now, will be 3 generations old when core3duo comes out in a few months.

If you do get that I highly recommend a 9cell extended battery for it, will make it a bit heavier but since it already has a very power friendly CPU and chipset it can increase usage to beyond 5hours off the battery.

Also consider a Dell laptop bag, they are very well padded.

Take alook at a Dell D420 - you can really haggle on them on the phone for the top spec ones and get them for around the 900 mark.

It's the "wizz bang" of 12" notebooks at the moment since sony OEM the tiny stuff from other not-so-hot brands a lot these days.

That is a great deal considering the business support offered by dell.

No optical drive means no CD/DVD drive. You do usually get an external one that you can plug in though - not the most practical of things, especially if you do need it when travelling.

Many thanks for the all the help and advice, and links to other threads. I decided to buy one when there were five left (sold out now). I will mainly be using it as a word processor and for e-mails, so hopefully, it should be okay.
