hi
Anyone got any suggestions for my neighbour, they want a computer for basic functions including web surfing banking shopping etc. The are in their 60's and this would be thier first computer. They would also need a broadband connection bt line-no cable?- so i'd did think the free laptop deal with aol looked good for them especially with £100 quidco atm

Laptop would need to be new and from a well known or tried and tested supplier! they dont have a great deal of money so the cheaper the better!
I did think of the Asus EEE or ACER One but i think that may be too small for them.
OS doesnt really matter as they are totally new to computing anyway -
thanks in advance I

if they are elderly I wouldnt reconment the asus eee, keyboard way to small for beginers and text really small for people whos eye sight may not be what it used to be

If you want a laptop then encourage them to get a reasonable one, they don't want to be struggling with a poor touchpad (the keyboard probably won't be a problem unless they're already proficient typists.

Is a desktop not an option? Much cheaper with a good sized screen and easily replacable mouse if it is rubbush.

no no room for a computer desk so laptop is preferrable

What about the eee box? Small, cheapish, easy to use.

Here's an Acer that will probably be suitable for their needs. Dabs are selling it for around £290 (40 quid more than your budget) but they are giving you a case and mouse for free at the minute.

Hope this helps.

Please please don't tie your elderly neighbours into AOL whatever you choose, although a 'free' laptop with AOL might seem a good deal you are paying a monthly premium to be with the robbing nuisances (took me while to come up with something polite there). Look into the free broadband options from Sky or TalkTalk, I think TalkTalk also do a laptop and broadband package but don't quote me on that one. All I know on the laptops is Toshiba is great and Packard Bell pants.
