Spend a lot less and have a much better perm. solution with a peice of network cable... cheap, reliable, simple and FAST! :) It'll even go up to gigabit!

just but the router is at one end and the xbox is at the other end of the house... i'd rather spend a little extra then see a family member trip and break something (knowing my luck it would be me that trips over it)

Homeplug is good!! Its very good if you know what you are buying. First thing is that they are idot proof. Really you just take them out of the box and they are either a yes or a no. If you have different electric mains rings then this wont work. You need to have it on on electrical ring or plug other rings manually.

If you buy one, make sure you buy a PAIR, buy the ones which are hOMEPLUG AV and have an advertised speed of 200mbps. The 14mbps and 85 mbps are not good, and get a lot of interference from the electrics.

The Panasonice HD ones are good, and so are the Corinex Av200 ones!! Go for them!!

what do you mean by electric main rings?
are the 85mbps that bad?

also does it work if i plug the homeplugs into exentsions and not straight to the side of the wall? will that cause problems?

thanks for your helpful reply

If you have surge protection, then you can have trouble. They surge protector will filter the ethernet signal out. Regular power strips should be fine as long as you dont have a lot of noisy (electrically noise like a blender, microwave, stuff that you turn on and off etc) attached.. !!
By electrical rings I mean that sometimes (rarely) a biggish house will be powered by seperate phases or rings. This means that you wont have electrical continuity between the two rings. This is sometimes the case in huge houses that draw a lot of power. Remember, the powerline units use the copperwire to transmit (piggyback) your ethernet connection through. IF you have different rings, each ring is isolated from the other, and this will make your signal go nowhere. Its rare, but it happens.

The 85mbps are not good, they are essentially the same 14mbps units with certain MAC level changes. They are inherently not good with noisy electrical appliances. And I would not spend my money on them. They (and the 14mbps) were based on the Homeplug 1.0 std, and what you need is the HomePlug AV standard or the UPA standard that corinex follows. Also If you buy say a Panasonic Homeplug AV device, you can then later add a netgear Homeplug AV device to it. But the corinex and homeplugAV dont mix!! SO make sure you chose the one and stick to it!!! But its a great piece of kit, blazing fast!!
