Was going to take my wife this week, booked Ryanair and all, but... Was going to leave hotel to last moment, suggest you do the same! Grab a real bargain then. I noticed Hilton are starting to advertise cheap rooms, but didn't see one in Venice.

See the Venice program on BBC 4 last night? No? Catch it on iPlayer. Awesome.

There are a couple of hotels we've stayed at right opposite the train station in Trieste. It's only one stop across the water to the island itself - just a few mins on trains that run every 5 minutes - and will save you a fortune. It's also where the buses from Treviso airport first arrive so very convenient that way too...

Less touristy - the 'real' Venice'. More romantic dare I say. Do NOT go on a gondola.

I drove there in the summer, stopped at Ca-savio, in a caravan, great place, Venice is not as dear as you think once you get off the beaten track. Mossquitos were a big problem in August but you will see none.
