How to use another router with the virgin super hub?

Read somewhere you can use another router with the super hub.. However those comments state the wifi for the hub was off rather than being in modem mode.

I require the same set up as I need to use all the LAN ports on my super hub but want a wired connection to my other router in another room which in turn sends out my wifi signal.

Has anyone had any success with this. On other forums people just state "oh I've done it" but offer no solution.

This is my setup, had the same issue like yours but got a workaround:
From superhub:
- wifi on
- no modem mode
- out of 4 ports, 1 goes to Xbox, 1 to virgin tivo, 1 to sony bluray player. Last one is connected to laptop in the furthest room and the laptop modem is used as wifi signal. You can use software like "Connectify Hotspot" or any other app that turns laptop/pc modem into hotspot. Everyone happy. Internet connect to all important devices via cable plus other items have wifi access throughout the house.

Its something i might look into in the future, but for now im just using a 7 port gigabit switch (upstairs) with an ethernet cable running to the superhub (downstairs).

Is your super hub in modem mode or is the wireless disabled?

Agree. In my case, might sound silly but there is someone on laptop from 7am to 11pm

FYI, just incase you do not know:
Modem Mode

When active, Modem Mode disables the wireless and routing functions of your Super Hub so you can use your own wireless router. For more information please visit http://www.virginmedia.com/help.
Active Ports & Connections

When in Modem Mode, only one Ethernet port will be active on your Super Hub, so when using your own router make sure it's connected to the active port.. Alternatively, connect a computer or games console directly to this port. When you are in Modem Mode, to access the Main Menu type 192.168.100.1 in your internet browser.

So, you might not get what you are looking for.

I use the Netgear GS608 available at Amazon
Its not the cheapest, but its been 100% reliable and its quick.

I used to have a routers when i had ADSL Using one as a Master and one as a slave. The master handled the DHCP, the Broadband and was WiFi enabled. The Slave was literally acting as a switch with Wi-Fi enabled. I had the exact same SSID on both and Security key, so my laptop seamlessly connected to whichever signal was the strongest.

I imagine it would work very much the same with the superhub

I think you can just use your new router as an extension and an extra wifi!, the only issue I suppose that will come up is DHCP!

Okay. Sorted it out. All working good. Wifi has been extended, however it's significantly slow when connected to the new router. Doesn't matter as the pc,ps3 and other computers are still connected via the super hub and are taking in speeds of 30mbps.

Solution: change the LAN ip for the super hub to anything you like. I made it 192.168.1.2 - connect an Ethernet cable between the 2 routers using any wan port.

If like me, you are using the old virgin router then the ip for that will be 192.168.0.1.. Log into that and turn of the DHCP for the second router - not the super hub. I also turned off the firewall for the super hub.

Apply settings for both routers, then change the wireless settings of the new router to match that of the super hub. I'm using them on different wireless channels and so far haven't experienced any signal drop.

If done correctly it should be working fine. My only concern is that the wifi speed from the second router is very slow. If anyone has any output on this as to how it may be increased at least up to 20mbps then please let me know.

To clarify: 2 routers are connected together both sending out a wifi signal. This is also allowing for extra Wan ports to be used if needed.

What cable did you use between superhub and wireless router? cross over or straight through

Crossover cables are only normally used to connect two PCs to each other not for normal network access purposes. Never to my knowledge are these used to connect to hubs, switches modems or routers.

Did you resolve your loss in speed thru the additional router Captain? I'm also noticing a 20mb loss using Superhub2 in modem mode and my belkin N150 router and not sure if homeplugs will help. I realise the N150 is not that powerful and may be the cause of the loss

There was a huge loss in speed. I've since used a wireless repeater which has caused the same issues. I am back to using the SuperHub as a standalone device. I'm looking at purchasing a better router now.

Sorry to bump, but need a bit of help.

I got a SuperHub 2 upstairs and just recently purchased a Netgear router as a repeater for downstairs. My connection is as follows:

Superhub connected to Homeplug
Netgear connected to Homeplug

Everything works fine, but do I need to setup anything else like Repeater Mode? I can't seem to find anything on the SuperHub that allows this.

Did you guys try openwrt/DD-WRT, these are custom firmware that you can install on old routers especially for router extensions.

Your old router must be the "Cable" type (otherwise it will just act as a naff extension).

1. Use the second router for Wi-fi / DHCP etc
2. Place the Superhub in Modem Mode
3. Connect the 2nd router's WAN port to the 1st ethernet port on the superhub (cable type does not matter, all modern kit autosenses anyway)
4. Enjoy.

I've got the new super hub 3 in the house and want to put WiFi in my bar out side I've run an ethernet cable out to the bar just need to install a hub I've got 2 old virgin hubs , can it be done ? or will I have to purchase a universal hub set up ? thank

On a superhub 3 it's port 4, nearest the F type coax connector.

Having bit of trouble getting the Netgear Nighthawk to get a WAN IP address. I am able to connect to Nighthawk, but cannot ping the super hub IP address.
