Haven't bought a used car for awhile now.

If I find a car I like from a private seller, can I just get it taxed and insured online and drive it home the same day? Does the tax online service accept 1 day temporary insurance? Or is it better to come back a second time?

Do you pay for a car (£8000+) in cash or bank transfer?

Hi there I would arrange the insurance first then when you come home with the car or on the way home with the car you should tax it. As long as it has mot it should be able to be taxable. When paying for the car pay via anyway you prefer as I prefer paying by cash

So put down a deposit and come back another time? Then that means I'll have to do another 30-40 miles journey. Do the tax online service accept 1 day car insurance, I can't seem to find anything on this.

you can buy the tax online and get an insurance quote before you go and set the best one in force once you have bought it.

I wouldnt carry £8K around with me so would pay via bank transfer. Maybe do an initial one to the seller before you go for £1 so you know you have all their details correct, then just pay the other £7999 on purchase (or less as surely you will haggle them down a bit ;) )

You need to tax it before you drive it a ANPR canera could pick it up , i got a car last week just went on the internet and taxed it online in the dealers , they email you back a conformation so if you get stopped you can show the police the email

Oh forgot to add, if you already have insurance give them a ring as they gave me cover for both cars for 7 days, had to pay the £25 admin fee

You can get it taxed online and insured on the same day. You will have to tax it with the previous owner present as you need the code on their logbook to get it taxed (the little slip you get doesn't have that number needed for tax). You don't need insurance details to get it taxed.

The previous owner can also complete the new owner form online. And you can just do tempcover for the journey back - it's not an issue.

May also wrote up a receipt yourself and ask seller to sign and date it- on it, write that he will be liable for any parking tickets, speeding fines etc etc before purchase date

don't forget to do a proper hpi check to make sure the vehicle , isnt owing finance , previously written off , stolen ... etc
if youre paying cash , ask to see some id from the seller proving they are the owner as shown on the v5 & legally allowed to sell the vehicle.
make sure u take green slip( new keeper bit) with you .... make sure you both sign the v5.

What's the best value hpi check service you recommend?

I can't reccomend a best value option .... TBF there about £20 ... what's £15- £20 when spending £8k .... I've used both the rac and hpi.co.uk in the past ... imo the £1.99 checks don't check all the information . The 2 I mentioned above were the most comprehensive checks at the time I bought my cars .

totally agree with you. the aa £19.99 check is spot on as it goes through the information thoroughly. did one of the £1.99 app ones and it just says if scrapped stolen or coloured change .. does not even say about finance which is a main thing when buying a motor.

All the points raised on this Citizens Advice web page will be of interest.

the new keeper suppliment DOES contain the information required to tax the vehicle if you are a new keeper.

Good question about the insurance as when you tax a car online it checks current mot only
I tax cars online quite a lot and most are not insured and the car is still able to be taxed successfully

Also you only need the v5c/2 , small green slip , to tax it

RAC did a good job for me - slighter cheaper than the others I could find.

If you pay by credit card, you will have Section 75 protection in case something goes wrong. Not exactly sure how you pay by credit card, is it similar to a bank transfer on your banking app?
