How Cheaply Can I Get Sky HD TV?

Evening All

I wonder if any of you battle hardened Sky TV gurus can help?

I am a non Sky subscriber and never have been one. I am considering hooking up to Sky for their HD service.

Their online calculation page is showing the package I would be considering is: £50PCM + £279 one off costs. This is for the broadband @ up to 8mb + Freetime Sky Talk + 2 Entertainment mixes and Sky Sports + HD box and subscription.

Just wondering what sort of discount/referral/freebies/free months/whatever I could reasonably be expected to wring out of Sky for this sort of package?

Please note, at the moment I'm not looking for any sort of personal reference(though I may be at some point), just an idea of what I might expect to get if I decide to go for it.

Many thanks for your any suggestions.

Changing the subject a little but just a word of warning if you were considering V+/Virgin.

It sounds great as it is much cheaper on paper, you don't have to buy the box outright and you don't have to pay BT for line rental. I should be paying approx £50 per month for V+ XL TV package, 2MB internet and all my calls (inc. line rental).

The reality is in the 6 months I have been with them they have only got one bill right, typically I am paying approx £70 a month.

The V+ picture is great when it works you only get BBC HD, but it looks like it is upscalling SD. It has been plagued with sound and picture glitches ever since I got it though and two engineers have failed to fix the problem.

Worst of all though is the customer service - foreign call centres, hours on hold and broken promises.

I am just waiting for the SKY HD box to come down in price then I am switching to SKY, so I will be keeping an eye on this link.

If you're in the market for a new telly as well then Curry's are selling LG's for £300 off marked price if you get a Sky HD box, which as if by magic costs £300. Meaning in essence you pay full whack for the telly but get a free box.

But I wouldn't bother if you're not looking for a tv also.

My friend has just had the engineer in putting Sky+ in. The engineer makes commision on sales of HD boxes he can flog to customers having the sky+ installation. However as he knew my friend, he recommended not taking up the HD service with Sky for another 14 months!

The reason he gave was that for the £299 for the box + another £15 per month for the service you only (currently) get 5 or 6 channels. In 14 months Sky have a roll out plan to add over 30 more channels to the HD list. At this time the cost of boxes will come down to around £80+installation fee

Use the HD on DVD's in the mean time

Go though paypal, currently £135 cashback for new sky members, then when your registering say a friend recommended you and you both get £50 worth of M&S vouchers.

Don't think you can do this. To get the quidco cashback you have to go through the online ordering process (naturally). As far as I'm aware, there's no point during this process at which you can mention being recommended by a friend.

To do the recommend a friend / MS voucher thing, you have to order by telephone.

I'd also be reluctant to risk screwing up my quidco cashback by trying to get vouchers too.

I went for SKY HD about a year ago. Not really worth the money at the moment, not enough content. Would wait if you can. I know how it is though, shiny new TV, want to see what it can do. Would be cheaper to get a HDDVD player and watch a few films.

If planning to do this, and joining sky before friday - I have a code that will get you free sky+ box and installation (I would get £50 of m+s vouchers and need your name, address and sky account number)
