I have a retail version of XP Pro and an upgrade version of Windows 8.0 Pro; both genuine versions bought from MS.
I have a new system and don't want the hassle of installing XP and then upgrading to Windows 8.0 so what is the current workaround that allows me to use my Windows 8.0 download media to install on a clean SSD in a new system?

Ideally I'd like to use Win 8.1 media which I don't have but I understand that even if I can get access to it my Win 8.0 key wouldn't work anyway for installation! Sure I can upgrade 8.0 to 8.1 for free but it's very time consuming.
So the second question is whether it is possible to use my Win8 key to do a fresh install with Win8.1 media and if so where can I find the media?
Asking to find the media might seem like a dumb question but I don’t use torrents and such like and you can download genuine Windows 7 ISOs from Digital River or at least you could.

I just want to install and use the software that I have bought without having to jump through too many time consuming hoops.

Just done a search for the page . Here it is :

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media

the create media button downloads the iso and even put it on a DVD.

instead of a fresh install (which you can't do with an upgrade version) could you not clone the hdd that Win 8 is currently on to the new ssd. Not sure how the key is stored (it could be stored in the bios which would lock it to the motherboard)

There's nothing to clone as it's a 'new system'; see above.
There are workarounds hence my question but they may have changed if MS closed some loopholes hence my question as to what is currently possible.

According to this you should be able to use the upgrade media to do the install and then use this workaround to activate it. With regards to the second question, you can't use the Win 8 key to install Win 8.1 so don't even bother trying.

Thanks, hopefully that workaround is still active.
It's annoying that I can't just download a Win8.1 ISO and at installation give it my XP serial number before providing the Win8 serial and let it sort out that I am properly licensed.
At least with XP you could use the same serial number when installing with the latest Service Pack which is what 8.1 is anyway.

Can you not download the Win8.1 ISO on your XP machine, put it on a USB stick, boot from that and then use your upgrade serial? That's what I did!

1. I don't have an XP machine as this is for a new build; see above. It's a licence i have from aeons ago but hasn't been used for years.
2. Windows 8.0 serial numbers don't work with Windows 8.1 installs; see above.
3. Where did you get your Win 8.1 ISO from?

Sounds as if you have an 8.1 serial number which is why it worked for you.

Try this to get the Win 8.1 ISO: http://www.techverse.net/download-windows-8-1-iso-image-using-windows-8-product-key/

I've just upgraded 4 of my XP laptops to Windows 7 ,reason being I wanted them all with SSD's . My netbook I just did the other night , a fresh install of Windows 8.1 with an SSD .
Now , the net book initially was bought second hand with Windows 8 , I upgraded it freely from the app store to Windows 8.1 .It came with no key or disk and I wanted to do a fresh install of Windows onto a SSD.
So, I ran a keyfinder to capture my key . I went to the Microsoft website [ there is another post on this site with the link ] and downloaded Windows as an iso [3.2GB] . I put the iso onto a DVD and did a fresh install using my newly found key and I now have
Windows 8.1 .
All legit , I have used my Windows 8 key with a fresh install of Windows 8.1 .

Thanks, I'll give it a go with 8.1 as it seems it won't take long to try it anyway and it may come in handy in the future.

I haven't tried with my upgrade licence yet but I used a full licence serial number which I think is for 8 and it activated no problem with the 8.1 media that ricko linked to in above.
