starts at 0, if people up vote it will go up 1 heat, if they downvote it will go down 1 heat.

It is designed to give the power to the mods. Ie if you post a deal that is really good then they change the link to one of theirs so they will be paid loads of commission on via affiliate linking then they will just boost the post up to hot in order to get loads of hits on it.

Daft thing is that if you "sheep vote" 100 times a day (vote not on the quality of the deal but follow the crowds votes ) you will quickly move up to 4 or 5 degrees per vote , as it will be considered as high "activity".

If you actually consider the deal before voting (and god forbid oO comment to justify your vote) a couple of times a day your vote will remain at 1 as your "activity" will be low , even though I consider that adding comments to posts rather than just following the flock is far more helpful to members

Hi :) There is some information for this in the Help pages:

The HotUKDeals temperature gauge (the little red and blue arrow next to each deal) is used by members to show their opinion on the deals, competitions, vouchers and freebies on HotUKDeals. Members vote "hot" for those offers that seem pretty special. Enough hot votes and the deal will go front page.

Deals which don't quite hit the mark tend to be voted cold - remember if you're voting a deal cold, it's in the interest of the community to leave a constructive comment within the thread.

If you're a new member, you may notice that the temperature only changes by a very small amount when you vote - this is completely normal and the amount will increase once you've become an established member of the site.

Posting hot deals yourself has the biggest impact on your vote power, and helping out other members will also give you a boost. So vote fairly, be constructive and helpful and by doing so, you'll establish yourself as an important part of our community.

-----

So new members will start at a low voting score. You've got to get involved (posting deals which gain heat, get involved with discussion etc) and you'll see your vote score start to increase.
