As a suggestion, you might want to take a look at this deal thread.

HotUKDeals - 15.4" Laptop Medion E5211 *Cel T3000 *300GB HDD *2GB RAM *REFURB *12m Warranty £228.94 @ electrical-deals.co.uk
http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/15-4-laptop-medion-e5211-cel-t3000-/771702

Edit - It comes with an internal wireless card with class b/g/draft n coverage on it; from all accounts other members of this forum, who have purchased one, are getting Windows 7 OS as well but there's no guarantee of that. If your step-son is at school or college, you can purchase Windows 7 relatively cheaply (it's a Microsoft approved resellers for higher education that provide it) and the deal thread for it is here somewhere on HUKD (I couldn't find it I'm afraid but it is there).

IMHO I think this is a decent enough deal - it's not a current state of the art laptop (i.e. not a gaming laptop! ;) ) but it has all of the necessary components needed to give it enough power to get the job done.

Medion isn't a well known company name but they do produce decent hardware (I've used their branded netbooks & laptops in the past) and their customer support was decent enough when I've dealt with them.

Hopefully other members will reply to your thread and give you some more input.

As Scotty said not good enough for gaming but would be fine for MSN, facebook, general surfing and homework and a great price.
