find out what your son needs to transfer, im sure he will know the size of the files he is using, then you can start looking from there.

try memorybits.co.uk they also work with quidco as far as i can recall

Depends how much you want to spend, currys sell the sandisk titanium 4gb for £8.99, which is a bargain at that price as its practically indestructable, and 4gb should be enough for homework and a few tunes too..

Likewise the 8gb is only £13.99 although Currys are taking off the difference in VAT (down to 15% from 1.5% which is apparently a 2.13% discount) so should be even less than this

Was this priced up @ this?
I saw some in our local Aldis, but was told by assistant they were £9.99. So never bothered.

7DayShop have various ones and free delivery at the moment

For basic needs a 1gb should be fine - Simple Word precessing files and spreadsheets etc take up very little space - Depends on what it's going to store.

USB 2.0 Flash / Key Drive - 1GB - Dane-Elec High Speed 110x £2.99

Or a 4GB one
USB 2.0 Flash / Key Drive - 4GB - Very High Speed (110x) - Black - Dane Elec Nacre £6.29

or

USB 2.0 Flash / Key Drive - 4GB - Very High Speed (110x) - Red - Dane Elec Nacre £6.29
