Make sure you have a copy of your driving licence with you - a lot of them ask for a copy, though not all.

Check out the vehicle you want to test online before you go so that you know the spec / engine / transmission etc that are available - and then call the garage before you go to make sure they have the car available for test drive.

A decent salesman will want to know what you will be using the car for, what timescale you intend to pay for it over, whether you have a trade-in vehicle.

If you are a genuine buyer then you'll already know all the answers lol - if you're just browsing, have your story set before you go otherwise you'll get confused and the salesman will know you're not a serious buyer.

most dealerships I went to didn't ask for anything. Only the big ones wrote down my details. Drove 3 cars without even being asked if I could drive. But yeah they usually sit with you and dont let you go to far or too fast.
These ones that do the whole day test drive thing will prob only want drivers license and will have insured the car so you can drive it on their insurance, probably.

Also I saw a punto when i was looking. Needed a jump-start, the guys excuse was it was run down by the cars internal clock. Sure sure and my house is made of cheese.

Also whatcar guide will tell you common problems with any car you look at, and an estimated price

Aah! Brings back memories of this great deal. We ended up with the Megane for nearly a week.

Most good dealerships if you're purchasing a new car will happily give you the car overnight... as long as you don't want it over a weekend, they're pretty flexible.

I test drove a mini diesel but because I found it really sluggish they re-arranged to give me a petrol version. I'd pick it up on my way home from work on the one night, drive it home and then drive it into work the following morning so that I could properly see what the car could do.

All they asked me to do was take in my licence and sign the insurance forms.

I'd never buy a car without testing it at full speed.
