I have an old Imac which I am setting up, it is an Intel model and would originally have shipped with OSX Leopard but the drive has been formatted, I want to install OSX Snow leopard as that will provide an upgrade route to the newer OSX versions.

Can I buy a retail copy of Snow Leopard and just install it or do i need to get a copy of Leopard and install that and then upgrade to Snow Leopard ?

Thanks

if you go into the app store and search the OSx you would like. You should be able to download them directly from the app store.

Thanks for the help, I had seen this page

Unfortunately Snow leopard was first version to have app store , until that point you needed to install from disk/usb software checks prevent newer versions installing on an Imac that would have physically required a disk when it was originally sold, Otherwise I would just download a newer version and install

I cant download Snow Leopard as oldest version I own is Yosemite, so will have to buy a physical copy.

My main question is can I install Snow Leopard straight onto an Imac that was shipped with Leopard or do i need to install Leopard then upgrade to Snow Leopard

I guess you should be able to go straight to Snow Leopard. I recently changed out my drive for a larger SSD which required a clean install, which I did via an external DVD drive with the El Capitan disk, the Mac shipped with Yosemite.
