AVG 8 Free its very good.

how do you get 8? dont you have to pay for that?

I use Avast Antivirus, have been using it for about 4 years, it doesn't slow your system and works in the background.
Then for spyware I use both Spybot and Ad-aware.
To make up your mind try neutral comparison sites like CNET, you get ratings, descriptions, etc.
Your wireless router should have a firewall.

Forgot to say all my solutions are also free, Norton is rubbish as it is difficult to remove from your PC, Kaspersky is the best but unfortunately and I stand to be corrected, but you have to download aspects of AOL which also is difficult to remove from your PC.

I use Avira free antivirus. I had a subscription to Norton but I uninstalled it as it was slowing down my PC. Avira is really good, runs quietly in the background, daily updates and is effective. The only annoying things are that after you update you occasionally get a small popup asking if you want to update, but you can easily block it from happening.

I have used AVG for last 3 years and never had a problem.

also had norton, and got a load of viruses which crippled my laptop. the repair people replaced it with NOD32 which i've been using ever since and found excellent. it should only be about £20ish
