I currently have an iphone 4 but will shortly be getting an iphone 6. I have read that I can transfer all my contacts, apps etc from my old phone onto my new phone via I tunes or iCloud . Both options seem straight forward but is one method better than the other ? I do not have many apps or photos on my phone and I have never downloaded films or music. Thanks for your help

Sorry to but in. I will be doing this too but from an iCloud back up. The current phone is on version 7.1.2 and the new phone is on iOS 8. Will the back up make the new iPhone on the older iOS (if that makes any sense). I want the old phones info to go to the new phone and be on IOS 8.
I'm so confused now, I'm not sure if backing up from iTunes is a good idea if it downgrades iOS on new phone. I think I might have to go and ask in the mobile phone shop . Let me know how you get on. I did watch a you tube tutorial and they done backup via icloud and all looked simple enough.
Think it will be fine restoring from iCloud. Ive googled and it says the same there too xx hth

It will, if you run an iCloud backup from your old phone, then startup the new one you will get the option to build from existing backup... Choose the icloud one you have just done and it will copy that stuff on without affecting anything else. Trust me, you can downgrade the iOS using an iTunes restore as I have done it. If it doesn't pick everything you want, delete the backup, change the settings to include what you want and back it up again, clear the new phone and repeat.
All the time you have your old phone you can repeat until you exactly what you want.
Good luck!

via iTunes will probably be faster and it will ensure everything is transferred over

Back it up in itunes. When you plug in the new phone, restore that backup. It's really simple and your new phone will feel almost exactly like your old one - all old messages, contacts, photos, even the way the apps are laid out....
Also back your old phone up to iCloud in case of catastrophic itunes issues (never had any myself but best to be safe)

The iTunes on the laptop is signed up to my Apple id. How can I get the stuff off my daughters mob onto the new mob? Seems like its gonna be a problem. (The new phone is for her)

Recover the new phone from an iCloud backup, it will only pickup what you include it that...usually contacts etc

Sorry I'm not computer savvy, are you saying that when I switch on my new iphone I should select backup from icloud as this will just copy my contacts etc over from my old phone whereas if I select backup from iTunes it will also copy over the iOS from my old phone and therefore downgrade it from 8 to 7 ?

When you turn on the phone, it'll give you the option of restoring it from a backup.
Can't say for definite but doubt restoring a backup from a phone on iOS 7 will force an iPhone 6 to downgrade its software

You can't downgrade the iOS, restoring data from any iOS will not restore it to that iOS. You are only restoring your data not the actual iOS.
