Hi, I am going to upgrade my 3G to a 3GS this week and I want to unlock the old phone and give it to my wife who is on Vodafone. Can someone point me in the right direction in terms of what I need to do. I would like to transfer all the apps from my 3G to the 3GS so I am interested in the order I need to do things. Also, once the 3G is unlocked will I still be able to use the App Store and are there things I need to avoid doing to prevent the phone from getting bricked.

Thanks

Pete

Hi Pete,

Firstly update both phones to the latest firmware 3.01 in itunes.

Follow these insturctions to jailbreak the phone here:
http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4447

Secondly the unlock procedure here:
http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=2538

Before you attempt this next step try to backup the 3g iphone on 2 computers running itunes, then at least you have a backup plan if anthing goes wrong.

In order for you to be able to transfer the apps to your 3GS, simply give your 3GS iphone the same name as your 3G iphone in itunes, then do a sync (assuming you have already done a backup of the 3g iphone on the same computer) itunes should then copy all the apps, contacts and settings over to your new 3GS.

In order to prevent apple re-locking your phone after all this hard work, DO NOT allow any further firmware updates that Itunes may offer unless the Dev Team or Cydia says it is OK to do so. (a quick google will tell you this info)

Afer doing all this, the App Store should still work exactly as before, although you may prefer to get free apps off Cydia once the phone is jailbroken

Enjoy!

Thanks that seems pretty clear. Once I have the 3GS cloned from my old 3G can I easily wipe the 3G without effecting the 3GS?

yes, just change the 3g name to something else after the cloning procedure so it will no longer sync with the 3gs apps.

Cheers, it was all pretty easy if a bit of a pain in the ****. Followed the instructions and upgraded my firmware first using a restore but this all seemed pretty unnecessary, especially as I had to download both the 3.01 firmware (to upgrade to) and the 3.0 (to get the jailbreaking software to work). It also meant that I had to sit their while it restored from a backup which took forever. You would have thought the easiest way would have been to simply tell people to upgrade the firmware by "checking for updates".

Hate to keep asking you stuff but do you know if Apps I have bought can be run on both phones? Is the purchase by phone or by Apple Id?

Have some Rep by the way

Hi pete, i can help you with this, you can indeed run apps you have bought on two individual phones but you will need to sync them as the same device name, however apple states that each app is only licensed to 1 product.

you may have also noticed that if you have already purchased an app and select download again, itunes actually lets you download it again for free if you have accidentally deleted the previous download. i dont know if this works if you connect 2 seperate devices and try it like that to sync them with the same data but its worth ago

if u want any more help feel free to pm me :)
