I am going to buy my husband an Ipod classic 8Gb when I can eventually get my hands on one. Have been wondering whether it is worth paying for 3 years insurance - I think John Lewis was £39 for 5th generation but if it stays the same that is quite a high proportion of the total cost of Ipod for what is effectively just 2 years of insurance. Thought I would ask here as have no idea of reliability. Many thanks

Hello MoneyLover

Its best not to buy an iPod yet the new Apple iPod lines are coming out this month.

Visit www.apple.com/uk for more information.

No its not worth buying the insurance for £39 unless you think it will get damaged easily or you think you might lose it or get stolen/

Sorry, I shouldn't have called it insurance, I really meant extended warranty.
I am trying to get a feel for how reliable Ipods normally are as we havent had one before. It would be the Ipod classic for £159 so the extra warranty add on is quite a high percentage of the actual Ipod price.

Hello MoneyLover,

No there is no point they come with free 1 year warranty. If anything ever happens you could always buy it later!

My friend has one of the first ever ipods and it's been through the wars yet it's still on the go.

My ipod nano had a problem a couple of months out of warranty but they still fixed it for free.

I would say, out of my friends who've had ipods which have died, the average lifespan for those have been 3-4 years. Those who had extended warranty or insurance were quids in though as two of them had discontinued models and got new ones which were worth a lot more - an ipod mini 3 or 4gb was replaced by a 30gb video ipod. That was insurance though on that occasion.

I personally wouldn't buy extended warranty, they are pretty reliable in my opinion and the only thing I worry about is losing it.
