Is this a decent laptop deal?

I got an email from Comet earlier advertising the Toshiba laptop on the link below as a special offer with £107 off

http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/504882/TOSHIBA-SAT-L300-1BW?cm_sp=FeatureEnd-_-Laptops-_-position1

Im looking at getting a laptop for a xmas present for someone but really havent got much of a clue over spec etc so could anyone tell me if this laptop is a decent price for the spec or indeed of any better offers / prices that may be around.

It would just be used for basic internet use and taking photos off a digital camera, maybe playing dvds etc

Thanks in advance

I had this laptop for years (or the older version of the satellite pro) and i had no probs with it in the whole time I had it, the ram could be bigger but 1GB is fine i would say for what you want it for. the storage is more than enough as 160GB is adequate enough for high usage and lots of movies save to your hard drive. I'll find a reply i posted a few weeks ago when someone wanted laptop help

I will always advise to get a dual core processor so it can run muliple things at once on different levels (or something along these things) and i think Vista takes up quite a bit of the processor usage so better to have dual. With the hard drive space it is quite generous, depends what you store on your laptop- an average film, for example, is about 700MB. the RAM could do with being a little more-look for 2GB but 1 is sufficient enough-just dont go below 1GB say to 512MB or it will run really slowly. Vista home premium is always going to be the better version as it has more features but depends whether you think the extra money is worth it. a few of my friends have had problems with Acer and so Siemens might be a better bet? Although I am just using my opinion to come to that conclusion. Hope that helps ..
Obviously not all that applies to you but it might be of use. I think £300 for a decent laptop is about average now a days. I have intel core 2 duo processor, 15.4 cyrstalbrite lcd, 358 mobile intel graphic card, 3GB RAM, 160GB hard drive, dvd super-multi writer, subwoofer, wireless and bluetooth. It cost me £300 a few months back and has been great

what is it for?
for basic internet & office its OK
for video editing & heavy display games it would struggle

the processor (Celeron) is not too good, better search an AMD Turion X2 which would fall in that area of price

Yeah its just for basic internet surfing and storing photos etc

I had a Toshiba years ago which was the first and best laptop I had across the piece hence why I thought id look at this as ive had a Dell and an Acer since and the Acer was particularly bad, however looking around there seems to be lots of difference Toshiba's and I havent a clue which is the best one for that kinda price or indeed whether you can tell which is newer by the model numbers etc L300-1AD looks similar to this Comet one for example. Or indeed whether there is a better deal on another brand out there that anyone is aware of?

Thanks for everyones advice

Not a bad laptop but overpriced for a Celeron. Over £300 (even a Toshiba) you'd expect to get at least a Dual Core or even a Core2Duo.

Unless you're in a great rush to get one, I have a feeling prices are on the way down. Have a look at some of the laptop deals posted here over the last couple of days. Looks like there's going to be a fight amongst retailers to get the christmas money. Good for those who still have money to spend.

It Is a Dual Core.

Admittedly it is a Celeron Dual Core, but it is a Dual Core non the less.

Have to agree there. I suppose I should have said that I would expect a Pentium Dual Core or Core2Duo at that price. I bought a Celeron (admittedly single core) for £203 yesterday. This is no bargain. :)
