While the spec is OK the brand of the laptop is not.

Advent are only sold through PC World & Currys (same company).

These laptops tend to be made by "generic" laptop makers in the far east and just "badged" by PC World / Currys.

Because they are not sold on the "open market" competing with other suppliers like HP, Toshiba, Sony etc you rarely see product reviews for them, and have no idea how well they are made, what the reliability is like, and if they are value for money.

In the past they have had a reputation of using very low quality parts and having bad reliabiity. It may be better now (I have never owned one) but personally I would rather go for a well known brand.

There was a 17" HP laptop posted here on HUKD about 2 or 3 days ago that was a better bet, that was also a refurbished laptop from PC World.

Given the choice I would rather go for a HP than an Advent.

I will contradict myself slightly by saying I have found a review for a Advent 9415 laptop (not the same model as yours, just using it as an example).

It was in the July issue of PC Pro when they tested 9 laptops at the £300 mark.

The Advent got the lowest mark, review here

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/labs/196701/advent-9415.html?searchString=9415

Here is the full review of the 9 laptops

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/labs/165/300-laptops/introduction.html

The Dell Inspiron 1525 came top, the Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pi12515 came second.

While this was the July issue of PC Pro the magazine always comes out well before that date, and these laptops could well have been tested in the March timeframe so these models may not still be available.
