You dont need to resort to using pirated software to protect your PC. There is loads of excellent free software around that will protect your PC.

AVG Anti-Virus is free for home use - http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/

Zone Alarm is an excellent firewall and there is a free version -

Adaware will protect your PC against spyware etc and has a free version

I also run a great little free program called WinPatrol that sits in the background monitoring your PC, checking nobody is trying to install any programs without your knowledge or change your internet settings.

I should also point out I have been using all these products on my 3 home PCs for about three years and never had a problems with viruses etc.

As has been said, you can run all 4 programs quite happily together.

A bit of help on security for your computer.

There are two absolutily VITAL bits of security software you need on your computer, anti-virus and firewall.

A virus is any sort of malicious program or other piece of software that is trying to damage or corrupt your computer. An anti-virus program will scan your computer looking for any programs or code containing a virus.

With an anti-virus program it is VERY important to download the latest virus fixes from the companies computer (AVG does this every day), it is also VERY important to run a virus scan. AVG tries to do this every day which can be a bit of a pain, but you should do it at least every week.

A firewall will check EVERY program that tries to go OUT from your computer to the internet, or any program that tries to come INTO your computer to the internet.

So obviously Internet Explorer will need to go out to the internet, and your firewall will ask you if this is OK. If you reply Yes you are never asked again.

But if the firewall asks if program "steal credit card details" (or anything else you do not recognise) wants to go out to the internet you have the chance to say no.

While there are other useful security programs (like checking for spyware) the two above, anti-virus and firewall, are the two vital ones.
