Optical Zoom - 3 times magnification (3 x )
I don't know an awful lot about camera's but I am learning slowly !! I have been looking for one for a pressie for OH ... what I have learnt is the Optical Zoom needs to be at least 10 x to be of any good .. this one is only 3 times
I would leave it if it were me .. hope this helps :)

Thats not strictly true. If you need 10x zoom then yes, buy one, but if you only need a little bit 3x is fine. Just don't expect to be zooming in on the birds in the garden or getting great detail on footballers from the stands. 3x is fine for a walkabout camera and has just enough reach to pic your other half at parties etc. without having loads of other people in frame.

3x is average for small compacts. For 10x, you'll be jumping up a bit in size and price and make sure you have decent optical image stabilisation on it, as a small shake at full zoom will add up to blurry pics unless you're in really good light and shooting with a fast shutter speed.

This camera (which I'm posting after you've already purchased) is OK - its got ok IS, a high ISO mode and face detection). TBH, it was never worth £200 despite what its being sold at, there are too many better cameras at that price around. That said, at £90 it's pretty decent and as you've already said you're not too good with cameras, you'll find the Kodak's are really easy to use and you should hopefully get some good shots too.

Enjoy your purchase.

made me lok at my olympus mju-and found 3x on that. I use it quite easily on hols to the other side of the swimming pool to take kids pics. For a non-pro like me its more than adequate.
