Guys, I need some help.

I need to spend 4 hours (in two 2 hours slots) to look into investments but it is so boring that I have been putting it off and putting it off for the last 2 to 3 weeks. It is important and I need to do it, but I just can't motivate myself to do it at the moment as I have so many things going on that is keeping me entertained elsewhere which I would much prefer to do!

Can anyone recommend a way I can motivate myself to do this? I don't like the idea of putting the time slot into a calendar as that will just make it worse as then I will get very put off as the time approaches.

Any suggestions guys?

thank you for the suggestion, but i was asking for motivation to look into the investment, not the stuff that is distracting me elsewhere!

what investments are you after? I feel with under market value properties and 10% rental yield within the property market (north east investments)

i need to learn about two different areas of commercial investment, which i think will take me 2 hours each. but i just can't get the enthusiasm to do this.

invest in bitcoin. good investment

Just get a financial advisor to do it for you. Not your husband though, with his propensity to gamble you could find yourself bankrupt or owning half of Singapore depending on the luck of the draw !

i don't need investment advice. i need to motivate myself into taking time to investigate two areas of investment that i am interested in. but obviously, not interested enough as i am not doing it.

i am more than capable of learning about investments myself and most financial advisors only deal with simple stuff for the public. i am looking at something else.

that's your motivation, 2 hours looking at the see whilst studying with no distractions.

this is where i am failing as the study means research over the internet so i need to be in the study for 2 hours to read up all the stuff and analysing it all.

the former. i don't need advice. i need to read up and learn/analyse about the investment that i am interested in. i need to lock myself in the study for 4 hours, which i can not bear to do at the moment. i plan to do it in two slots of 2 hours as they are two different areas but i don't know how to tie myself down to do this.

i am hoping people can give me inspiration on how they manage to sit down and study for long hours.

If it means that much to you, you will find the way. After all you are only looking at four hours. Could you break it down into half hour sessions? Or maybe you could promise yourself a reward when you have done it. Sometimes it is hard to get started but once you are into it it is not that difficult. A bit like doing the ironing. If I have something I need to get done but I don't want to, I designate a day where I have to get it done. I then do all the stuff necessary as early as possible so that by the afternoon I've done all that stuff I've been putting off and I can reward myself with the afternoon off feeling smug at how much I have achieved.

If you can't motivate yourself to do it, stop moaning and don't bother doing it!

i like this reward idea. i will have a mull over what reward would motivate me. thanks.

i am not moaning. i am asking for suggestions to help me as i need to do it. it is not possible to leave but it is possible to delay, which is what i am doing, just delaying it, when i know i should not do so.

My suggestion.... What works for me...

Clear my desk so I have a nice clean and tidy environment.
Get yourself a lovely coffee.
A bit of light music in the background.
Schedule a break due in one hour, with a chocolate or treat.
Then do second hour.

well for starters 2hours is too long you need to break it down even further..30 minute slots x 4 will give you your first 2hours.. the thought of doing 2 hours is putting you off.. take regular breaks in between each 30 mins even if its just to go and make a brew... when i revised for my sergeants exam i just did 30 mins revision at a time i had over 90 hours of revision to do...

i think you are right. it is the long hours that is putting me off. if i just did 30 minutes, it will be more palatable.

You don't need to pick the reward in advance. Just get the job done and then when you see something you want but can't really justify you know you deserve it. I have one of these reward pending at the moment
#24
you have spent hours writing this and replying to people. you could have done it then.
Or go and get someone to do it for you.
You'll feel good after you see the end result :D

i need to have the reward in mind in order to motivate me. if i see anything i want, i can always justify it, this is never a problem for me. lol.

this is my problem. i would rather spend the 4 hours on this site pretty much wasting time because i enjoy it, but i can't spare the time to do what is important.

i cant get someone else to do it for me as it is an analysis that i must do. i need to do it myself as i will need it to make a decision based on my analysis.

i don't know about feeling good as i may end up dismissing the idea and i have spent 4 hours just to dismiss something, but that is how you learn about something.

Sounds to me your're just lazy and easily distracted (I can be like that sometimes).

Of all of this woman's daily "help me" threads, I think this might be a new nadir. I don't think I've ever encountered someone so hopelessly incapable of literally anything.

Of course I'm not serious, Or am I?. :{

Have you done it yet OP?? ;)
I'm struggling to motivate myself too. Trying to set up a Web presence but can't be arsed - too many disruptions and actual work to do.
I tell myself to just do 10 mins and see how I feel, usually I end up doing more than 10 mins without realising.

Some of the replies just do not understand motivation, and lack there of! I had fully intended to do 30 minutes first thing this morning as one of the reply of breaking it down further was a good idea, but i got up late then i got distracted with other things and so, no, i havent done it again!

i will try to do it later today, but i was a betting person, my money is on 'not gonna happen'. Lol.

I think this is unfair comment. I am sure put to a challenge, i can do more things than you, but whether i can be arsed to bother is the question.

How do you eat an elephant?
In small pieces!

So what is the minimum useful unit of research / study that you can set aside as progress?

one of my favourite elephant joke here,

how do you fit 4 elephants in a car?
two in the back, two in the front

how do you fit four giraffes in a car?
two in the back, two in the front.

No you can't as the elephants are already in there! lol

Anyhow, i have managed at last to do the first leg of the study and have done 30 minutes. i thought it would take 2 hours but it didn't take that long so i just have the next task to do, which i will try to do some time later this week. :D

If you don't have the enthusiasm to research the potential investment properly, don't invest in it.

If you can't happily sit down for 4 hours of research then it's not the investment for you, you should move on and find something you have more of a passion for.

Stuff I have passion for don't make money. Lol. I make money through investments so I have to do it, else I will starve! Now that I have done the first task, which is the hardest bit, the second task is not so daunting. I will try to do it, now that I have wasted so much time talking about it. :)
