Anyone know of any good deals to Lapland? :santa:

My son wants to take his 4 year old daughter & I wondered if anyone has any experience of this trip they would like to share.

Thanks in advance! :santa:

I took my kids last xmas to there for 2 nights through Canterbury Travel. Perhaps my expectations were too high... but i found it very very comercialized. Was quite sad really, the kids were really looking forward to it but it felt so rushed and they spent too much time taking you to shopping arcades just so that you would spend your cash. Its very very expensive out there so beware !

The seeing Santa part was pretty naff to. I expected a sled ride with huskies through woods for about half hour to visit 'the man' in a log cabin in a remote little offset somewhere. Basically it was some old wood somewhere and the sled ride to the cabin took 3 mins ahem 'round the back'. All in all though im not a 7 year or 5 yaer old kid, so i dont know how they percieved it. They said they had a good time, but i felt it could have been better and was told so by several people who have experienced it before - all feeling its now too comercial.

Oh and the only thing that let us down was the climate i suppose. Being briefed on how cold it was by the tour operator, and buying loadsa stuff at tkmax like thermals, preping the kids for 4 foot of snow etc etc... it didnt snow hehe. It did about 4 days before but by the time we got there it had turned rock hard and so was very dangerous to let the kids out on.

All in all i guess you take it for what it is. To me there was no 'magic'. The kids liked it, but to me it all felt a little bit 'ship-em-in, ship-em-out'. Perhaps 10 years ago so im told it might have been different - also perhaps it might have been cheaper. For what we paid we could of had a week in the Bahamas ;-)

The 3/4 day trips can be quite pricy, there are also day trips available.

The following tour operators offer trips to Lapland

Cosmos www.cosmos.co.uk
First Choice www.firstchoice.co.uk
Canterbury Travel www.santa-holidays.com

YOur local travel agent would be a good start they will be able to offer some advice and get a quote for their best price.

I wouldnt even entertain a 1 day trip. From the airport the coach trip is a good 3 hours away from the main 'Santa' resorts. Basically the kids will be knackered, grouchy, and i couldnt think of anything worse. If you are gonna go for a 1day check flight and transfer times - i guarantee it would not be worth it, tooooo hectic !!

PS the coach trip is a white knuckle ride in itself. How anyone can drive at around 40-50mph in icy snow, downhill, round bends, coach full of kids, coaches coming the other way !!! Hahaha i couldnt sit still, every bend and oncoming vehicle i was gripping my seat lol :-)

Thanks to everyone for your imput!

Some mixed experiences through Canterbury Traveland!

It does seem a lot to paid if there is no magic!

Do you think 4 years old might be a bit young for this experience?

Any one else had a good experience?

It was a few years ago, but we went on the one day Extravaganza to Lapland with Canterbury Travel and it was fantastic.

http://www.santa-holidays.com/html/extravaganza.html

It was a very long day, starting at the crack of dawn and getting home in the early hours of the morning, but it is a day that the four in my group will never forget.

If you apply early enough there are usually one child goes free, saving about £400.

I think 4 may be a bit young - when it's cold, it is VERY VERY cold! Also, will they remember it all that well?

No child has ever returned from one of these trips believing they have had a brush with the bloke who brings them a Playstation on christmas eve. They do more to ruin the magic of christmas than anything else.
Father Christmas is a wonderful, mysterious man you leave a mince pie for and who performs miracles, but you never see.
He can't be found at the end of an Easyjet flight.

My family go to disneyland paris for xmas every year and say the magic is amazing. It snowed one year on xmas day and my niece cried with joy.
There is no atmosphere here anymore, people have replaced tradition with
commercial hype.
However whatever you do to make christmas special, each to there own.

My daughter and her friend believed it was the "real" Santa - all others in shops were just his helpers. The elf called "Snowy Bowy" always left extra bows on my daughter's presents after the visit.

They TOTALLY believed it
