If i was to buy a laptop which would need to meet the following requirements, which would you suggest and what sort of price am i looking at.
Tonight my husband mentioned it would be nice to have a laptop
1- so he could use a computer when i am using the other and
2- because our computer is in a small bedroom out of the way and i thought it would be nice to be able to look at the internet and do things whilst in the same room as the family from time to time ie. when they're watching tv.
With this in mind i would want the same operating system-vista home edition and it would be used mainly for using the internet, not really downloading though. No games unless it is kids ones and they are all under 8yrs at the moment. Other than that i cant think unless anybody else can think of other uses.
Then it makes me wonder if i really need one but i think it will be good for the kids to use this one im on now, more as they often ask and i can use the laptop in a more kid friendly environment to watch my 1yr old.
Hope that all makes sense
oh and would i be able to transfer things from one computer to the other easily, i have a wireless router

yes laptops are great. A couple of tips though,

1. I would prefer to go for a less expensive brand (buy dell rather than sony) but would take extended product cover for at least three years with it. Laptops do break down very easily specially the hard disk and dvd roms if you are a heavy user like me. By the way, I have a dell laptop with 4 years cover and I have already got my hard drive, dvd rom and adapter replaced under that cover from dell, within first two years and who knows what happens in next two years so it is really worth it in my opinion.

2. If you buy a second hand dell laptop with warranty, dont forget to transfer the ownership of the laptop in your name through their website. A friend of mine didnt do this and he cant get his blown up screen sorted out though it is still under warranty.

God, what did u do to yours throw against a wall? How did ya break ya DVD ROM? Laptops arent that fragile, Dell Laptops are very sturdy. I havent had a problem with mine. It hasnt left the house let alone my bedside table. I paid nearly £600 for mine.

:-D as I mentioned, I am a heavy user, watched a lot of movies on my laptop. Had to format my hard disk for a couple of times due to fresh windows reinstall etc. have been using laptop for heavy simulation work, kept it on for days and days, in short, used it quite roughly :)

If my post implied that dell laptops are not good, it is not so. I would say they are the best value option in the market.

No wonder your hard drive went you need to give the hard drive a break. Its not the same as a PC. You should turn it off when not in use!

Cool, theres no point buying a new one unless your prepared to spend £600 at least, you want the best possible system you can get for that.

are you mad? why do you need to spend £600 on a laptop to do what she asking of it? I have two laptops at the moment, one a medion that is a year and half old, has better specs that the one that you are trying to sell, and therefore can easily do what she wants it for. it has had one problem in that time but that was covered under the free 3 year warranty that came with the machine, and that cost just over £400.

You can now get better spec that my machine for £300 to £400 range that would easily do what she wants and from good manufactures.

and if you to: http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/category/572/Laptops/n/9%201000572
it is the comet £300 - £400 range and you will find couple of very nice hp and sony machines who are top manufacturers and would easily do the job you want but if you are spending £600 for a machine for general internet browsing and word processing etc you are being ripped off and if you pay £300 for second hand one with those specs when you can buy a brand new with those specs for around the same price you would be stupid
