I've heard bad things about sony laptops: terrible support, overheating issues (remember the sony battery problem) and expensive hardware. If I were you I'd go for this dell for £411 (downgrade the support), it's near enough the same specs, plus you can upgrade as you like and still save a lot of money (I'd recommend upgrading the graphics card):

BASE Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core T2080 Processor (1.73GHz,533MHz,1MB L2 cache)
OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows Vista™ Business - English
HARDWARE SUPPORT Collect & Return, 1 Year Service only
LCD 15.4" Wide Screen WXGA (1280 x 800) Display
MEMORY 1024MB 533MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x512]
HARD DRIVE 120GB (5400rpm) SATA Hard Drive
GRAPHICS CARD Intel® Media Accelerator 950 Graphics Up to 256MB shared graphics memory
OPTICAL DRIVE Fixed Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Drive including software
PRIMARY BATTERY 6 cell Lithium-Ion Battery (53 Whr)
Accessories
WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY Dell™ Wireless 1390 802.11b/g Mini-PCI Card (for Dual-Core Processors)

There's also this one, which costs £539 and is much better than the sony you mentioned:

BASE Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T5300 Processor (1.73GHz,533MHz,2MB L2 cache)
OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Premium - English
HARDWARE SUPPORT Collect & Return, 1 Year Service only
LCD 15.4" Wide Screen WXGA (1280 x 800) Display
MEMORY 1024MB 533MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x512]
HARD DRIVE 120GB (5400rpm) SATA Hard Drive
GRAPHICS CARD 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 7300 TurboCache™
OPTICAL DRIVE Fixed Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Drive including software
PRIMARY BATTERY 6 cell Lithium-Ion Battery (53 Whr)
WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY Intel® Pro Wireless 3945 802.11a/b/g Mini-PCI Card (for Core 2 Duo Processors)

Not a bad price for a Sony, they do tend to be more expensive. They also tend to be smaller lighter and prettier. So whether you want a Sony or not depends on if they are qualities you prize in a Laptop, if yes then it's a good deal otherwise you will get a better specification for the same price elsewhere.

sk1 is kinda right and kinda wrong about Sony. Sony did have massive problems with batteries which overwhelmed their support and caused many problems including overheating. However all the suspect batteries have been recalled so this is no longer an issue. Despite that particular problem Sony are generally regarded as being pretty good support wise and are market leaders for laptop batteries. They actually make batteries for many other laptop brands including Dell, so to say Sony's had an overheating issue then suggest Dells are better is nonsense.

My personal preference for laptop brands are as follows:

If you want a top quality laptop you should be looking at: Toshiba, Sony, Asus, Fujitsu, Rock etc.

If you want a good value laptop you should be looking at: Acer, MSI, Evesham, Mesh, Dell etc.

Also currychops is spot on, the newer processors are better, but they'll cost you a few £ more.

Hope that helps

Used to sell HP's when I worked for Dixons group, they're not particularly great and aimed at your average PC World punter who generally doesn't know any better. They do make good printers however.

For that sort of money I'd rather have one of these: http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Asus_F3Jr_Laptop_F3JR-AP085E/version-1.asp well worth it for the extra years warranty, let alone the better processor, DirectX10 graphics chip etc.
