hi there,

my dad is starting from complete scratch and has been utterly converted by spotify, he's currently moaning about the quality he gets out of his desktop with cheapo speakers and wants to purchase some new higher end equipment to use around the house

he wants a laptop capable of running spotify easilly and good for streaming movies and general written work

particularly he wants to purchase a new soundsystem for the living room which will play his existing collection of CD's and be able to plug into his laptop so he can jsut spotify everything

he's outdated with it all and has all his old gear and i dont really have a clue on this front so every bit of info is helpful :D

the more discreet it all is the better no wapping great sub plz!

That's my current setup and works perfectly with what you need - discreet speakers with an excellent laptop for Spotify and everything else!

The only thing missing you would need is a CD drive (this laptop doesn't have an optical drive to keep weight low and battery life high) - I would recommend looking at this http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/lg-ext-slim-white-03714084-pdt.html we have used one in the past and has been quick to read and write, plus looks very stylish

If you shop around you can get within your £800 budget :)

thanks very much for that, i think he'd prefer a screen at least around the 15" mark (should have mentioned that before) but id have thought theres a larger equivalent, he's just asking me here about a squeezebox aswell ive never really come across one but is it worth the money investing when a laptop would seem to do the job? also is a USB connection for the speakers the best route for sound quality out of a laptop?
cheers joe

The benefit of the B200 is that it comes with a dedicated amp that plays through USB - it bypasses the built in sound card, thus giving a really good sound quality!

Not used a Squeezebox as I haven't used one before, is it for streaming the music around the house he wants it for?

ye me dad read that and really liked the idea of the speaker system as he was saying soundcards in laptops will be cruddy looks like a bit of a winner there,

i dont really get the benefit of the squeezebox as if he has a laptop then its portable anyway, the squeezebox seems to be more designed towards having music stored on a PC then you can just remotely control what your playing but im not sure what would have to be plugged in where to make it all work, ive only ever heard of the thing today...

are the speakers on the b200 wireless?

Yeah the internal sound card will be average, thats why I went for it - the speakers are not wireless no
