Laptop as present for son in university!

Hello, I was introduced to this site by a colleague and I must say I'm quite surprised to see the amount of bargains here!

Anyways it's my son's birthday soon and I thought I'll treat him to a new laptop, something more of a desktop replacement as his is 5+ years old - I have deprived him enough for quite a long time lol.

I have been browsing about and came upon this thread

http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44808&page=4

with the

http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/PROD/3-/3304815/-/Product.html?add=3304815&P36=4VHCKA

offer and from what I know of (not a lot) it seems like a really good deal.

He is currently studying media-graphics and likes to play pc games so I reckon he would like a decent graphics card on it, what do you think of this laptop?

He has an Ipod so firewire would be good and we usually connect through the net in the house via Ethernet cables, so LAN too?

I'm not very up to date on computers but I would like to get a very good deal for my son. I'm looking to spend around £800 tops!

Thanks for any help! Much appreciated.

Edit: I just realised could I get the above laptop and upgrade the graphics card or would that be too much hassle?

99% of laptops cannot have the GFX upgraded. So that would be a no.

and its onboard graphics so games are a no

Sorry not my field of expertise, but welcome to HUKD

Good Luck

Have you considered going for a decent desktop? Laptops really aren't necessary around most unis.. and if he has one already a powerful desktop is alot cheaper.

If not can't go far wrong with the gateway if you don't mind the graphics, or a dell to get the specifics you want.

http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Fujitsu_Siemens_Amilo_Xi_Laptop_LKN:GBR-101102-002/version-1.asp

Spec wise that is probably the best laptop for £800. It wont have much of a battery life (always the way with desktop replacements) but the Core 2 Duo processor and Nvidia Geforce Go7600 will play any game around at the moment.
Shame about the Gateway laptop's Graphics Card really, could have been a good laptop. I wonder what went through the designers heads? The Core 2 Duo and 2GB Ram are pretty redundant with an integrated video card...

If youwant a laptop that can play the latest action games this one is for you.http://www.pcnextday.co.uk/products/ProductDetail.asp?ProductCode=3384-6610

Take off the hardware support and the price comes down to £788.47. Really good spec laptop and will play most, if not all modern pc games.

Wow thanks for the welcome and introduction, very informative and kind of you lot.

I have thought about a desktop but the portability of a laptop is far too convincing..

satchef1 thanks for that laptop link (and the one on graphics card - that was really helpful) but I think the offer currychops posted is more attractive, what do you think? And yes I agree with you, after having a look at the specs properly, it's really frustrating to see such a good deal but only brought down by the non-existent graphics card!

http://www.pcnextday.co.uk/products/...Code=3384-6610

is more what I'm after but look at the £200 in difference compared to the play.com one! Oh well, you need to pay for good overall performance.

I think I will still wait around and search for more offers but that ZooStorm one is my 1st choice atm. I have never dealt with this brand or the website pcnextday, anybody with experience? I can't seem to find information on the warranty etc..something which I'm concerned about, I don't want a broken laptop after a year!

Thanks for reading my ramble, I am really appreciative of everyone's help here.

That ZooStorm laptop is a beast! :p
I dont normally like to loose but theres not a chance i can beat that spec for £750 lol

It might be worth considering this: http://www.pcnextday.co.uk/products/ProductDetail.asp?ProductCode=3384-6612
Its the same laptop, but for the extra £50 you get;
TV Tuner (Can watch and record TV on the laptop)
Windows XP Media Center Edition installed (Much better than XP Home)
Free Upgrade to Windows Vista Home Premium

To me the extra £50 is worth it for the upgrade to Vista Home Premium alone! It would cost around £60 to buy it separately and its far better than XP Home Edition (The OS on the £750 model)

Wish my parents were like this, i had to fork out myself ever since started earning from 17 yrs old! Oh well, at least they didnt stop me from buying what i wanted!
Dont know if you visit this site regurlaly but there seem to be weekly offers of some pretty damn good spec PC's and Laptops on here, maybe one of them suits you.
#12
satchef1 you have me convinced!

http://www.pcnextday.co.uk/products/ProductDetail.asp?ProductCode=3384-6612

Argh that offer is shouting 'come buy me!' I'm thinking about keeping it for myself now lol, nah I won't be nasty to him! I wasn't really looking to spend £800 on the dot but it's too good to miss.

Has anybody dealt with this website before? I can't seem to find that many reviews about it..

I must say I am really indecisive; I'm wondering should I wait around for a week or so or just lap that deal asap?!

TheManWithNoName haha this will be his only treat for a very long time now and cheers!

If a dell interests you wait till next Thursday and something like this should be available from Dell with Vista already installed. Note the 2gig of ram.

Your wasting your money if he likes playing games online - I learnt this lesson years ago !

In 1-2 years time, he wont be able to play any of the latest games, as his gfx card & memory will not suffice.

I'd get him a cheaper laptop (for uni stuff, sufing net etc) & maybe an upgrade for his current PC (memory, gfx card etc) if your going to spend £800 !!
#15
My advice is to wait a few weeks and you'll get a vista loaded laptop...in fact Dell are already selling them....but PC next day will probably not launch until next month.
#16
MikeT thanks for the dell link. It's pretty much the same as the ZooStorm set up but it has sacrifaced a low-end graphics card (according to the mobile graphics forum link) for 1gig of more ram right?

Hm the ZooStorm has a much better graphics card and I think it's better to go for that than the extra gig of ram..?

Thing is, whilst my son likes to play games he won't be too upset if he can't play any games out in 1-2 years later, as I've asked him. I'm really looking for a strong desktop all round replacement.

The Vista thing, is the wait really worth it? To be honest personally I wouldn't switch over to a new OS until at least a year of it coming out!

The ZooStorm offer includes vista upgrade.

Sorry guys I think I have pretty much made my mind up, just waiting maybe for a few more days to look around.

Still thanks a bunch for the advice!

I will continue to look at other alternatives, cheers.

Sorry didn't notice the vista upgrade on the PCnextday laptop...don't forget the 3% quidco cashback.... a tidy sum for that outlay.

Hey Fama, I'm the proud owner of a Zoostorm laptop. I bought it last Oct and couldn't find anything even close for the price. I think I've established that the chassis is infact a Fujitsu Siemens and the build quality is great. I have to agree I was very skeptical as I'd never heard of PCNextDay when I started my quest for a laptop.

When I ordered mine they were having severe stock issues and I ended up waiting 5 weeks for delivery (in their defence the website did indicate 4 weeks at least). I was extremely worried as they debited my account the day after I ordered and I thought I was enroute to losing £600.

Laptop graphic card drivers are an absolute nightmare to install and ATI will tell you that your PC manufacturer must supply them to you. I spent a considerable amount of time working out how to 'beat the system' and discovered a program called DHModTool4C. Your son may want to seek this program out as it will allow him to install the latest desktop drivers off the ATI website.

I'm in the same boat as TheManWithNoName:giggle:Wish my dad had bought me a PC for uni, I was stuck with an ancient Pentium 75mhz that struggled to play Solitaire!
#19
Luckily for me, in my first year at uni i was in a flat with three other Computing students and with their help i built mine back then, but with offers now its almost cheaper to buy then build.

Hey MBeeching thanks for telling me of your experience. I think I'm still gonna go ahead with this one as my first choice and will be making an order some time soon.

Overall apart from the late-delivery/stock issue, how has you experience with PC Next Day been? The 1 Year Warranty? Is there anything more you could share on? Btw which laptop spec did you get? Is it similar to

http://www.pcnextday.co.uk/products/ProductDetail.asp?ProductCode=3384-6612

?

Oh and the part about the graphics card lol I don't understand what you're saying but I'll get my son to look into it.

Cheers!

I bought my PC a few years ago. I got the hottest bleeding edge graphics card of the time, a ti4200. I personally see no point in upgrading my card unless I replace the whole system. I just play old games or keep reducing graphics quality and resolution till frame rate gets acceptabe :giggle: But yes you do get better GFX on desktop compared with laptop and dt is much more gamer friendly.
