Laptop choice

Hi, could someone with more PC knowledge than myself help me decide between these 2 laptops?

Acer Aspire 5920 @ £379

OR

Dell 1720 @ £379.97

Should I go for the larger 3GB memory and better processor or for the larger screen and graphics etc etc. It is not going to be used for PC gaming at this stage - more for internet gaming/poker and applications.

Any advice would be appreiated as both look good deals!

Many thanks.

I think you need to consider other things before making that decision.

Portability, battery life.....

Obviously the bigger 17" screen helps for less scrolling whilst viewing webpages, however most modern pcs coming with widescreen screens anyway kind of negates this, a bigger screen like this is mostly suited to Multimedia use, dvd viewing etc. Would be useful for spreadsheet use application wise.

A 17" screen units disadvantage is clearly in portability and reduced battery life over a smaller screen unit. If portability is a key to you having a laptop then a smaller screen would be a better option.

Vista runs fine on 2GB of Ram and the price currently of SODIMMS being so cheap (1gb just £12) dont let the memory difference of 1GB sway your choice.

Both obviously being budget laptops are not going to set the world alight for gaming, and there is only a minor difference, 1.8ghz vs 2ghz on the CPU side of things. You are not going to be using it for gaming, so the only real strain on the processor is maybe if you do a lot of multitasking, graphics rendering, file conversions/divx compression etc.

Main choices...portability and battery life over a multimedia machine thats less portable.

Hope that helps a decision. Bang for buck the Dell has the edge, however thats purely looking at it from a monetary rather than practicality aspect. As a stationary unit it offers more, but less on the portability stakes.

Personally I find Acer builds to be very good and good value for money, my wife owns a Aspirion 5100 and myself a rather old but well built Travelmate 2200 which I have recently taken apart for respraying and find the build just fine.

As I said though bang for buck the Dell has the edge, but for portability the Acer is great, however I have never had to deal with Acer customer service.

Thanks for all the comments so far - thinking that the portability point is making the acer more attractive. Any other good deals for <£400??!!

Nah, Coleman's got that bizarre stare he does, I've seen them live about 6 or 7 times and he's superb but a tad odd.

And that avatar you have doesn't equally have a bizarre stare  I've seen em 10 times live (soon to be 12 with the upcoming original lineup gigs) and your avatar STILL looks like Jaz Coleman (young version of him) lol.
