Your going to have to give us more info than that :)
What are you going to be using it for? gaming as well as learning?
Does it need to be light (portable easily) or will it stay in your residence (big screen)
Give us your basic minimum spec ;)

well it would mostly be used for uni work, but i will use it for watching films music etc. so i suppose would need a large hard drive, large screen. Don't play many games so shouldn't need a really high spec machine. light would be good but not essential!

Might I suggest a MacBook?

Here's what you can get:

MacBook (£643)
Intel Core Duo 1.83Ghz
13.3" Widescreen Glossy LCD
60GB hard disk (upgradeable to 80/120GB)
512MB DDR2 RAM (and the PC2-5200 @ 667Mhz too!)
Built in webcam
Built in WiFi and Bluetooth
Free upgrade to 3 years international warranty

Plus, as part of the back to school promotion (click here for more info) you can get £100 pounds off an iPod. So if you get the 2GB iPod Nano, it will only cost you £18!

The prices above are after the Higher Education student discount. The discount is only available through purchase by phone (0800 912 0207) or through the HE online store, http://apple.procureweb.ac.uk. Note that the store is only accessible from campus network connections.

If you are currently a Windows user, you might have some reservations about switching. However, let me assure you that there is Microsoft Word/Excel/Powerpoint/Outlook for Mac, MSN Messenger, Firefox, Skype, DivX, Limewire, Azureus, Bittorrent, and most other commonly used programs. Plus, you can always install Windows XP on it if you want, in which case you can run ANY program.

if he's got £750 why buy a £400 laptop? Best to buy a core duo, 512mb-1gb, 80gb. I think you can get one for this money.

Quite simple really, money saving. He has no need for anything other than a basic laptop with a widescreen that can play DVD's and run Works 7.

So why pay more for something that he's not going to benifit from. I'm sure as a student he can find lots of other things to do with the money saved.

then only he can decide if he wants to spend all 700 or less

Yes, but if you don't show someone all the options how can he make a decision...Hobson springs to mind:)

Actually... I do recommend waiting a few weeks for the first core 2 duo laptops to trickle through. They should be at about the same price as the current core duo ones, but are much much faster and... i think... support 64-bit operating systems for a better computing experience.

"much much faster"

that's not entirely true... depends...

can boonkoh just explain a few things for me please. would a macbook be able to play games well. im still confused about this.
suspended#13
the macbooks are apple mac laptops, but can not let your install windows xp on them, so you can dual boot and have both operating systems on it. so yes, use windows xp to play your games.
#14
what i meant was is the macbook capable i.e does it have the technical requirement to play games and to what extent
#15
i'd definately advise against the toshiba satellites. three people i know have all experienced unexplained slow down/data loss. toshiba wouldn't do anything about it.

i recommend the macbook. hot reviews and mac osx make it awesome.

which uni are you going to? note some universities networks may not work with osx. but then you could just switch to osx.

The MacBook will not play the latest games... its graphics card is an Intel 64MB one.

Only the MacBook Pro will allow you to play games... with ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 256MB. This is one of the best mobile graphics cards you can get out there.

To be fair, the MacBook isn't built for games. Its 13.3" screen is ok for everyday use, but for games you want massive screens... at least 15"+
