My daughter is about to turn 8, she is mature for her age and she has a basic slow comp but is not able to have any games on it so i have a budget of £250 minimum possibly upto £300 i wanted to get her the pink advent 1 from pc world but they dont seem to have it anymore so can anyone else recommend one that is going to last a gd few yrs as well as having good performance for when she puts pc games on as well as internet kid sites! and if possible but not important i would like it to be girlie!

I'd never buy a refurb for any reason! Also, since there is likely for the laptop to be damaged in the hands of an 8 year old, I'd go for a very basic one for as cheap as possible.

i know saying that it is for an 8yr old people think its going to get damaged whats the point but she is very matture she often uses my dads laptop when she is at his house or uses my desktop on occasion when im not at it lol

she is big into learning and she got given a lot of discs by my dad regarding the body, dinosaurs, the world etc and i need something for her so she can use all these when she wants!

if you have room for a desktop then buy that, or give her yours and buy yourself a lappy, laptops are expensive and easily broken by adults let alone young children

hi sassie!!

her dad has given me £250 for her to get a laptop coz that is what she asked him for, for her birthday but she still has £50 xmas money from him, and i did consider a desktop but because she stays at her dads that is why i was goin for a laptop!

I hope so :) Some friends of ours thought this too about their son. They had to buy another one [ not a son - a laptop :)]! You can base your decision on a question. "Has she broken or dropped anything valueable?" If not, then I'm sure she will be ok.

dee i do understand what you are saying, you arent going to get much for that sort of money, what sort of games is she into because if its anything that needs good graphics you wont get nothing for a few hundred

Not exactly going to play the fastest games but are under £300 and have a CD/DVD drive. I would watch if you decide on a Netbook (cheap small portable mini laptops) rather than a laptop that you get a usb cd/dvd drive to play the discs you mentioned as netbooks lack this to save weight/size.

Samsung XP netbook £299.

LOL im glad you put not son in brackets otherwise i would of wondered!! no she is very responsible she has had a ds for 3yrs without a scratch and has a ps2 which she turns off and puts all away when she is not playing. so imnot worried on the breaking front otherwise there would be no way she would be getting it!!

i dont really know enough about comps to offere advice, only saying i had my lappy a few years and it was £800 and to be honest there is no way its as good as a desktop, lifting it about, carrying it around, chances of dropping it, my ex boyfriends lappy slipped off the settee onto carpeted floor, im taking about a low settee and well underlayed carpeted floor, and it knackered it, knackered the screen, and thats how easy they are to ruin

netbook may be a good idea for the money you are looking at - plus you can easily buy an external dvd drive. The best bet is to look at ebay for this though, especially the x-box's hd-dvd drive, as they are much cheaper then external normal dvd drives, i got one last night for less then £15 inc p&p, (and it is apparently bnib!)

Another thought is buying one that is second hand but only six months old or so, so you still get six months warrenty plus you will also get a lot more for your money.

Ebuyer Value PC

Very good pc for the money /\
Just whack in a decent graphics card (unless you want to use on board graphics)
You'll be sorted for a good few years Id say

Youll also need an OS (upto you if you want lnux which is free or windows ) (or go the pirate way :pirate:)

Oh youll need to get a monitor separately or use an old one.
