wouldn't hurt to try both of them
#2
Have you tried contacting them already?

Na not yet I'm in work. Who would be best first, Tesco? Just try good old customer services and plead nicely?

Try this:
Consumer rights act 2016 - 6 years

You have up to 6 years to make a claim.

You say died? In what way? I ask as I have many people say this to me, when I check its simply down to a faulty power supply so the batteries run down and it never turns back on. Mostly caused by people rolling the leads around the unit! My pet hate!

When you say "died" what do you mean? Maybe something simple/cheap to fix without all the hassle.

Laptop turns on blue light goes on but screen hangs at a black screen. On previous 2 laptops I've had this has been dead hard drive.

I had this problem with a Samsung sound bar from Curry's. Died just before Christmas, guarantee ran out 30th December. It was 9th January before I could do anything about it. No point in going to Curry's, although Tesco CS might be better, so I phoned Samsung requesting an extension to my guarantee as I didn't think I should have to pay for the repair.

I took 4 long phone calls, repeating everything, and an email, no one ever got back to me. Eventually they agreed and the soundbar was collected for repair on 7th February. Still waiting for it to come back though!

Persevere!

Ok. So can you hear the drive spinning up? See the little drive light flickering? Sure it's not the screen that's dead? Can you plug this lappy into another monitor or TV via an HDMI cable to test?

you may get away with it being just out of warranty. have you tried pulling battery out and holding off button for a minute. then re try?

Worth ago, wont work if its hard drive though

my laptop at work died, but when i tried with external monitor it worked on that so if you have one maybe try that, then you'll know if its the screen or not

The only reason I ask is that I had a similar issue and it was the LCD inverter that had gone. Replaced myself for around a tenner. Still going strong today...

I think there's something under eu law which states warrntys are 2 year or long ler not the 1 year state by manufacturers look into it it may help u before u go speak to anyone.

Tesco will direct you to contact the manufacturer. Outside 6 months, I'm sure it would normally be the manufacturer that should be contacted but many will give some leniancy. We are still covered by EU laws as mentioned above and the Sale of Goods Act where an item must be of merchantable quality and fit for its intended purpose.

Bear in mind that the below in on the Acer UK warranty page:

Consumer have legal rights under applicable legislation governing the sale of consumer goods and this warranty does not exclude, limit or suspend any such applicable rights - independently of what may be stated on any warranty cards or other materials.

well if it's happened to you on three laptops out of three... what are you doing to it ? why not be adventurous and try booting off a disk or turning the brightness up on the screen or use an abacus ?

That's just two years to claim and it's superseded by the UK's 5/6 years.

Try to reseat your RAM (this would be my number one thing I would do).

If the blue light flickers on and off and the screen is still blank I would suggest you try an other supply lead, possibly take it to a repair shop and ask them to try it with an other lead.

Well if it's the HDD, just buy another one and replace yourself. Shouldn't be too hard to do unless you have to disassemble the whole chassis to get to the HDD. Usually there is a couple of screws to unscrew, you pull out the dead HDD and insert the new one in the caddy and put back in. Very easy.
