laptop hunt

I have an hour or so today at lunchtime to find and order a laptop for my daughter.
(She's 15 years old now, I'd like to think what i buy will last her through Uni.)

I've looked all over the forum and on the net, but seem to be going round in circles and cant make my mind up. Abit worried i'm going to make the wrong choice i guess.
I've come to the conclusion that i want 15" widescreen not 17", 2gb ram, big HD.

If anyone knows of any really good deals that are out there, i'd appreciate the links.

Thanks in advance.

It's only got 1GB Ram, that's not really enough, you need at least 2 for Vista
#3
yeah i've read that several times
so would have to add £30 or so for more memory
seems a lot of laptop for the money though ?

You read my mind, exactly what I am after too. Looking for best value laptop. She won't be using it for games etc, mainly photos and schoolwork.. Better if it was ready to go, not good and changing and loading things.

i'm trying to find one with a cpu and gfx and screen that will still be ok in 3 years from now.
those are the things youre pretty much stuck with.

ram and hd can be upgraded.

i didnt think it would be this difficult :-(

If you manage to keep a laptop running for 3 years you deserve an award, I never have any luck with the things, they all die bloody quickly. My new laptop is a superduper expensive one from Dell so I'm making sure I get the extended warranty with it so hopefully I'll get more than a year with it.

3 years is a long time, and that's just to last till she gets to Uni. I assume she'll be doing 3 years at Uni, and I doubt she will still have it after 6 years!

Get the best you can afford now and expect to upgrade when she gets to Uni imho

use code HPOPTF and get £40 off.

Operating system installed Genuine Windows Vista® Home Basic
Processor type Intel Core Duo T2400 / 1.83 GHz ( Dual-Core )
Memory 1 GB DDR II SDRAM
Internal hard disk drive 120 GB - Serial ATA-150 - 5400 rpm
Optical drive type DVD±RW (+R double layer) / DVD-RAM
Display size 15.4" TFT active matrix 1280 x 800 ( WXGA )

It says £370 on the main page but using the link above it is displayed at £355, Use the above code and get it down to £315 delivery is £5.

Not a bad spec laptop for potentially £320 delivered. I have taken a look and they dont even seem to be adding a delivery charge when I try to check out so it could be £315.

I'm hunting for a 15.4 Laptop as well. Problem I'm finding is getting a decent processor(Core 2 Duo), 2GB ram, decent graphics(Nvidia 8400 M which isn't great or bad, just snuggled nicely in between and should give the laptop some legs). It's really hard to get more than 2 out of 3 for a reasonable price. Dell seem like the most likely canditates to get all 3 but they seem to have gone extremly tight all of a sudden so hard to pick a deal. I'm just hoping something comes along. Would like something for Christmas but may have wait and see what January sales are like.
