Laptop Recommendations + Cheapest place to buy

Anybody care to recommend a laptop. Needs to be:

reasonable disk - 80GB
Powerful enough for photo but not video manipulation
Wireless Enabled
good battery but mostly used in the home
quite robust, not going to war but we have 4 kids http://www.concept2.co.uk/forum/images/smiles/icon_lol.gif
15" screen - at least 1200x800
ideally with MS Word as part of the package

Certainly under £1K inc vat and delivery and as near to £500 as can be done.

Thanks in advance

Mark

Mark I don't think you can go far wrong with this Laptop, I have been looking the best part of 2 weeks for a new machine under £500 and this seems to be about the best for the money.....Good brand - Intel centrino - DVD burner - Dedicated graphics (most companies now go the cheap option to bring the price of the machine down and have onboard shared graphics) this one will play games if you really wanted to.

Intel GMA 900 DVMT shared graphics

Thats going to be not up to the task of playing any games unfortunately.

mark doesn't mention games, but I do hate intel integrated graphics. dedicated ati or nvidia chipset for gfx would be noticed over intel when it comes to photomaniapulation and application use

Hi Thanks for all your input

I have decided to look at buying a Acer Ferrari 4003WLMi - advertised in computer shopper for £699 inc vat but not delivery.

Unless anyone knows a problem with this range I shall probably order one Saturday when I got a bit of time out of work to do the deal hunting

mark thats as good price, but you check tomshardware/anandtech in terms of benchmark, Intel Duo or Duo 2 is far superior technology to what AMD offer @ that price range imo, I use Adobe Photoshop @ a amateur level on a Core Duo 2.0ghz laptop and it's far nicer to use than my slower 3ghz amd desktop pc.

You're truly not going to be able to beat the Zoostorm Computer Shopper award winner from PCNextday for value for money. At £580 (inc. delivery) the specs speak for themselves - Check out that tasty 256mb Ati X1600 graphics card :)

http://www.pcnextday.co.uk/products/ProductDetail.asp?ProductCode=3382-6301

You'll have to forgive their site name as there is actually an arduous 5 week waiting list given the popularity of the machine, I assure you it was worth it though. I've been playing F.E.A.R, Half-Life 2, Doom 3 amongst others and couldn't be more pleased - I've also just fitted an additional 512mb of RAM which is only around £45-50 which was shockingly easy to do.

Thanks Again for your tips. To be clear the laptop is not going to be a gaming machine, its for my wife to support her scrapbooking hobby/business invovling a lot of photo manipulation

The pcnextday offer looks good, but although not in need of next day delivery 5 weeks is a bit long to wait as previous laptop is now u/s!!.

So - over and out from me and thanks again money savers
