Well after spending weeks looking at various offers, and missing some good ones into the bargain (e.g. the Lenovo at ebuyer) I have settled on 3 options;

I could now do with some help making a final choice from a short-list of 3.

The intended purpose is to provide a second computer in the home that will carry out most bog standard tasks (internet browsing/shopping, word processing, spreadsheets, powerpoint, certain amount of downloading -nothing excessive, storing music and photos, and basic game playing-nothing demanding).

I have limited myself to circa £350.

My options are:

1) Dell Inspiron 1525 at Tesco £349

2) Toshiba Satellite A200-1YO at Cdiscount £349
http://www.cdiscount.co.uk/Computing/LaptopsNetbooks/Laptops/toshiba-satellite-a200-1yo/f-613-179618.html

3) Lenovo N500 at Dabs £366.85 (cheapest since ebuyer ran out of stock and Dabs increasing price twice in the last couple of weeks)
http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=5CTS&CategorySelectedId=11105&PageMode=1&NavigationKey=11105,50600

Your considered opinions will be hugely appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation.

The Toshiba because it's got a Core2Duo processor, the other two only have dual cores. And Toshibas are better build quality. And I wouldn't buy a PC from Tesco or Dabs (purely personal choice there!). :)

can recomend dell outlet, got a decent dell studio for £298 a couple of weeks back.

Its worth checking it as stock changes all the time. I've had excellent service from them too.

Have been looking but no great deals yet. By the time you add VAT back in the best I could come up with in the past week to 10 days is around £390

And 4% Quidco I've just realised.

Both the Dell and the Lenovo have Pentium Dual Core CPUs (the Dell CPU is slightly better than the Lenovo CPU).

But the Toshiba has a "proper" Core2Duo CPU, which is better than both of the other CPUs (and probably runs cooler).

The Toshiba also has Vista Home Premium, whereas the Dell only has Vista Home Basic (the Lenovo also has Vista Home Premium but has the worst CPU of the 3).

So as the Toshiba has the best CPU, and a better version of Windows Vista, go for that.

Sorry, should have remembered that - just bought a TV from them. And you can pay in 3 instalments. :)

The Tosh seems to be coming up as the front runner. Any final comments/advice?

Mottmania,

I am looking to spend a similar amount and like your choices.

I really want one that plays high definition with a hdmi output. The Lenovo has this but do you know if the Toshiba does? (i've checked the specs but sometimes high definition isn't mentioned)

Thanks

Just checked it on the Toshiba site and it would appear not. This is now a discontinued product.
