Just noticed this on another thread.

Acer 2GB Core Duo 2 Processor etc. £450

Might be slightly over budget but the specs look like an absolute steal at that price.

if you use yor computer to do any work, i reccomend you stay away from vista.

If it comes pre installed you can actually return serial key to microsoft for a reimbursement.

You can actually return the serial key of vista to Microsoft? How much do they reimburse you and can you simply just install XP straight over Vista?

few good deals there - cheers. are acer any good then? never had any experience...

We use Acers at work and they seem alright to me. Not had any major issues with any of them and they are bashed and bruised every day by a year 10 class.

Why is Vista no good for work? I have never seen Vista in action.

My suggestion is:

try one of the ASUS -Mid range - laptops amazing machines to have and for a change you have free of cost warranty. We use them at our work place and have never known one to be faulty !!!

Use vista: You cannot run away from it

Vista runs a graphic intensive skin which clogs up your memeory and processor.

This is fine if you use your computer for leisure.

But if you use your machine for any processor/memory intensive work - like phot, 3d work, sound mixing, games etc then it will really annoy you as the "look" really isnt worth it.

Also most of these prfessional CAD programs etc do not have 100% compatibility with Vista yet.

It was the same case when windows XP first came out, it takes a couple of years to become standard.

Also, you can get a refund from microsoft for a pre-installed copy of Windows.

It is still a product which you only "agree" to keep when you acept all the disclaimers etc.

Im not sure on the details, but there was a whole group of people doing it on moneysavingexpert.com
