Are there laws about sale of alcohol in the morning?

Posted 22nd Dec 2013
Looking to go out early tomorrow to pick up some groceries. Will I be able to buy alcohol at about 8am? I remember historically you had to wait until 10am but can't remember if that's just Sundays. Cheers!

I think it's 24 hours in england - if the store is open, and sells alcohol you can buy it whenever you want

Thanks! Looking to go to Sainsbury's so I'd assume that they'll have whatever the legal maximum allowed time is.

I tried ringing but no reply, obviously the Sunday nightshift don't want to speak to customers when the shop is closed! I'll chance it for 8am in that case and keep fingers crossed.

    Thanks - all helpful answers.

Not sure why every answer here is marked as -1? I don't really get this 'best answer' and arrow score thing!

Nope, it depends on the licence they have, most shops it's around the 8am mark till 11pm on week days and later start on a sunday

well he said sainsbury's and most 24 hour supermarkets sell alcohol 24 hours. Never been told not to buy alcohol in the early hours. Only if you're already drunk etc. they won't sell it

    Welcome to Sainsbury’s Help Centre

What hours do you sell alcohol?

Stores in England, Wales and Northern Ireland sell alcohol within the hours agreed when their licence was granted to sell alcohol. These times are set in agreement with the issuing authorities in line with government and local authority guidelines and legislation. Due to the variation from store to store, we're unable to publish this information. Contact your local store for specific information, they'll be happy to help.

The Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005 governs the hours in which we are able to sell alcohol in Scotland. The act states that alcohol can be sold between the hours of 10am and 10pm. Some stores may have further restrictions, namely that alcohol can only be sold on a Sunday between the hours of 12:30pm and 10pm.

In our old house, our asbo alcoholic next door neighbours used to go across to the newsagents at 6am for their booze, so I think you will be fine!
