Could be an offset lever. Is the handle on the outside directly opposite the inner door handle. If not its a universal Lever Pad.

Hi handles are in different positions not directly opposite

it's a catch.

open the door, and with the handle still pushed down, move the top bit round.

it leaves the latch in, so the door can't slam shut.

Plus if it doesn't do as Adam says and spins it's broken (mine broke like this)

get right close up to it and look underneath
sometimes there's a small Alan key screw that may need tightening
