Looking for a Canon Eos or simular !

I like to buy a really good cam like an Eos 40D,but there are so many others, Nikon,Pentax,Sony,Casio,Leica is there so much difference between them?
Maybe someone knows which one is the best one and which one I should better avoid , as e.g. the lenses are much more expensive.
Also, are there any real alternatives in the small and compact sector?
Should I wait with buying it after Chirstmas, could they be a bit cheaper?

Thanks for any help!

I'm also after a DSLR one, but not sure which to go for, I'm after the lower end of the scale, trying to decide between the Canon 1000D for £290 from Argos or the Olympus e420 which is about £230 in Currys,

The best compact one to go for would be the Panasonic FZ28, thats got an 18x zoom and has got very good reviews everywhere.

I love my 40D but its not for everybody, I would seriously get yourself to a good independant store and have a play... I would never buy kit like this without trying first and to be honest what you prefer is more important for many reasons. I was going to go for Olympus orginally but I feel a lot happier with a canon in my hands now.

As far as compacts are concered well gerrard was right with the panny above but if you want more from your camera then DSLR is the only route to take...

However take a look at the Canon G9 (amazon) as its one hell of a compact "prosumer" camera with great build and RAW shooting capability at a great price right now (tempted myself!)

Have fun shopping...
