Looking for a cheap HD-DVD player...

Gosh I'm such an idiot :) I bought the Planet earth DVDs + a Jet Li Movie thinking that the recent Toshiba SD370E HDMI / Upscaler / DVD Player I purchased for £25 plays HD-DVDs..

Only then to realise that the average price for HD-DVD players cost upwards of £90!!

I know there's been deals with the X-Box HD-DVD player but I don't have an XBox

Are there any HD-DVD players that can allow me to enjoy these movies under £60 ? :)

Thanks!!

-have you bought planet earth in dvd or hd dvd

If you want a stand alone hd dvd player your looking at least £60-70 min
or £25 if you have an xbox 360

Best bet is ebay im afraid - id love a standlone hd dvd player but they are too costy

Are you saying that the Toshiba HD-EP30KB HD DVD player does not play HD DVD's ?

I know when it upscales, it's not HD can someone please explain this to me?

an upscaling dvd player plays standard dvds at higher quality than a normal dvd player

the format hd dvd can only be played on hd dvd players, not upscaling dvd players

I'm still a little confused with this.

It's just that my DVD Player is an upscaler also & i am confused by the 1st post. I got mine for £60 so was wondering if it was a true HD-DVD Player :?

Here's what I think is confusing

All the upscalers will say HDMI ... but it has nothing to do with playing HD-DVDs. The upscaler just upscales standard DVDs to make them look a bit better on the big screen.

I bought the Toshiba SD370E thinking it would play HD-DVDs but alas, it doesn't.... arrrgh!!! Alll these formats are annoying me to the teeter

I'm so annoyed, because I just went out to buy the XBox HD-DVD player to connect it to my PC. It's supposed to work but somewehre along the lines it's not picking up the HD-DVDs either

So I've spent around £50 now down the drain and countless hours, and could have just bought a bloody HD E1!!!

anyway getting back to original topic, if anyone can suggest a cheap but reliable standalone HD DVD player, I'd appreciate it, as I have a bunch of HD-DVDs now and getting really frustrated that I can't play them at all!!!

the problem btw with the xbox thingie - i've read about 10 guides... i have vista, so it picked up the drive immediately. i also managed to get hold of a copy of both winDVD and powerDVD. However the problem is in detecting the HD-DVD. For some reason it sees it only as a CD drive in Vista. My laptop is an ASUS G1S so I think it's more than powerful to handle HD-DVDs... but alas, it's saying that it doesn'ts upport HDCP and COPP.

OMG I'm sooooo annoyed right now.... :/

Download a program called anydvd and that will remove the need for hdcp compliant hardware.

i already got AnyDVD, but for some reason it just doesn't pick up the disc in the dvd player. i am running vista, and heard that the UDF drivers come with it already

This is so ridiculously frustrating. i've spent probably the last 10 hours trying to get it to even recognise the DVDs in the drive. Should have just bought a normal HD player!!

I've managed to watch HD Movies on my laptop running windows XP. I needed to download the xbox UDF Reader, so it can read the contents of the HD DVD Disk. Then I used PowerDVD v7 deluxe version which supports both Blu Ray & HD DVD. I think Deluxe v8 only supports Blu Ray
