My 21st birthday is approaching (June) and i plan to get a D-SLR from my parents, ive got a Budget of MAX £500 but am looking to spend less than that, the guy in John lewis recommended the Canon EOS-400D as i can get cashback from canon of £45 at the moment, looking for a good deal on that or if anyone here knows of something more suitable?

Thanks

Nick

Search previous posts regarding the EOS400D as I think you can get it for just over £300 if you include the cashback, quidco and other money-savers.

Would that be a recommendation for that camera? Reviews seem to date back to mid 2006 so not sure how it fairs compared to the newer cameras

Not so much a deal website but when I was looking at getting my camera I checked out www.dpreview.com which is a nice review site of all the major cameras. You can compare and search specific options and what not, helped me choose. The canon though is a real nice camera. Just be careful about the size of the camera. I got myself the fuji S9500 (not recommended) D-SLR. It was quite big however and I got bored carrying it around. Sold it on ebay and got myself a canon G7 which is a compact digital. Small enough to fit in my pocket but with all the same features of the fuji (smaller op zoom) other than that its great. A lot less missed opportunities as I carry it about more now.

Im nearly sure I got my fuji from amazon which has some nice deals ever now and again. Oh and also amazon.co.uk when I was buying I phoned and said as I was spending over £500 would they offer me any discounts. I got £15 off voucher and free delivery. All discount gratefully received.

Cheers for the input dude, i am worried that i will give up carrying it around but i always think i have my n95 for if anything i really need to snap comes up. I plan to be starting my own business in the next 12 months or so and im hoping the investment in a nice camera will give me more flexibility when taking product shots etc

Rep given to all

Try jessops
http://www.jessops.com/Store/s35964/0/Digital-SLRs/Canon/EOS-400D-(Black)-%2b-EFS-18-55mm-Lens/details.aspx?&&SortBy=UndefinedASC&IsInStockOnly=False&comp=y

The Canon EOS 400d is 394.99 and if you put jessops in on this site it takes you to a code for £25 off - Good Luck.

This camera was one of the choices for my husband but he ended up buying the Nikon D80 which is fantastic, but a lot more expensive.

I've got a K110D (basically the same but without image stabilisation) and it's great but as it's my first DSLR i can't really compare :-D

I've got this camera and it's fab, make sure you get the 'K100D Super' which only came out in November last year. I went to buy my K100D as it was being superceded by the super model so heavily discounted, when i got home the dosy girl at the shop had given me the new £349 model for the £229 price, a free bag and 50x free prints :-D:-D:-D

I've used the Pentax for four months now and have been amazed at its quality, it's got image stabilisation, a dust remover and does everything you'll need to get going. upto 3200iso, up to 1/4000 shutter etc etc etc It's in the same ballpark as the Nikon D40 etc.
I also bought a Samsung 50-200mm zoom lens for £79 from PCWorld business, it was £159 everywhere else !!!! this lens is made by pentax, it's the same as their own lens with a different badge

Don't forget with your budget to buy :
£20 - UV/Skylight Filter to protect your expensive lens
£25 - 4x Ansmann rechargeable batteries inc charger, 2700mah, these are the dogs ****
£12 - Sandisk Extreme III SD Card 2gb will give you over 500 best photos
£25 - £100 on a decent tripod
£20 - On nice bag, some of the lowepro ones are excellent
£5 - cheap IR remote off ebay (i use mine all the time for stills)

All you need then is a copy of Photoshop

Enjoy !

Hi,

I;ve just read your post and see you want t step into the world of DSLR! :-) you won't regret it.

I've recently upgraded from a 400d to a 40d. the 400d is in very good condition A+. It has a total 4500 shots of use over the past year (these cameras are built to do 100,000 shots before needing new shutters...) and am looking to sell it with a few must have accesories with it too.

400D with kit lens 18-55mm (worth £350-£400 new)
70-300mm USM II lens (worth ~£180 new)
400D body grip with extra battary (worth £120 new)
2x UV/Protection filters) - (worth £20 each)
400D field guide bought off amazon. (£12)

total value new = ~£700

I would like to see £450 plus shipping .... I think £10-15 would cover it....

I was looking to get around £500 in total off Ebay though on here I would'nt need to pay ebay their fee I'd be happy to sell it for less. I live in Swindon if you are local to the area you are welcom to visit.

The equipment is in as new condition kept in a very protective bag. This way you would really make the most of your budget! ;-)

Thanks for the offer, i appreciate it but as its for my birthday and my parents are getting it for me, ive got my eyes set on something new rather than used.

I should just add a comment about the body grip, it is a must for anyone with big hands or simply wanting to shoot more naturally in portrait mode. I holds two batteries so not only doubles your charge use, it results in a better feeling camera size wise,,, this is the official canon one (not a cheap hong kong copy). there are lots of pictures on the net of this if you are interested.

I understand the new comment ;-) just thought to mention it as you said about the budget and this hobby can get expensives!! :-)

FYI - They are all in original boxes now with full wrappings on a shelf so look very much new.

Happy shopping though!

Rgds,
Nick.
